iAUDIO IN BENGALURU-AUDIO YATRA CONTINUES

The only problem with pictures is that we have to use the mouse to go towards the right by which the charm of pictures is reduced. ;)

Also the pictures didn't catch that mouse scampering into its audiophile den within a den - at Santosh's place ;)

Vinay, i am very sorry about the inappropriate size of the pics. It was a mistake during conversion as I had hurriedly done it from Bangalore itself, where I was trying to make use of the better internet connection. I usually use flickr which has the option of changing image sizes even after we upload, this one doesnt!

"Inappropriate" pics are most welcome :licklips: please email me directly next time :ohyeah:

hi stieveboy

your set up looks awesome!!!
when cud i come over???

Hi Subhash,

You're most welcome over :) But you'll have to wait a couple of weeks till I put the amps on a rack and the TT on a wall mount. I have discontinued auditions till I get the LP rack in place cos without sofas the room sounds quite terrible. The three musketeers audition was an exception since they travelled the far seas to reach here. I'll definitely give you a buzz when its ready!

Regards

Stevie, Nice setup
I see you have bubble wrapped those valve. That's good. I have had bad experience handling them casually.

Sunday morning, I watched Avatar with Santhosh till about 2 am. Then after a shower and a quick cursory logon to hfv, slept at around 3am! Ah, its so nice to sleep in B lore with the cool weather you barely need a fan. Barely a few minutes later, the mobile started singing the wake up song! Turns out it wasnt a few minutes, it was 630am. Got ready, listened to music on the B&Ws while Santhosh brought me some strong coffee. Again there was no time to ride Santhosh s RD350! We headed to Blore club. From there we went to Soundsgreats place, where we were met by this cool dude with long hair who makes awesome speakers!
His set up:
Source: Marantz cd53
Amp: DiY tube pre amp, Nad multi channel Power amp
Speakers: DIY floorstanders with Soundsgreats own drivers
We played Keith Urban _ Greatest Hits album and the vocals were powerful and stunning. Check. The speakers were time aligned with the front baffle finished in automotive black finish.
Shreekanth played a couple of his tracks. I do not remember the exact track, but there was this Allan Taylor track which sounded particularly haunting. The speakers put up a large soundstage and deliver quite strongly in all areas of the spectrum. We played Taal Se Taal Mila from TAAL OST next. The low, deep and resounding drum came through quite well without any sub in the picture but there was a bit of booming. The female vocal on this track is by Alka Yagnik, which somehow didnt sound up to the mark, slight shrillness, lack of body etc was felt.
The setup rendered Saraswati from Into the light quite well, even the fast mandolin notes with accuracy and good tone.
Michael Shrieves Sorcerer was delivered with good attack and excitement. The song opens with a dark mood and this was quite effectively portrayed. The transients as the drums join the lead and bass guitar in action was delivered quite well.
We played the de rigueur Marantz test disc. Here comes the Rain again by Judith N, could have done with slightly more body. Else separation and detail were very good. The Chinese drums track was delivered with gusto but the gradients in the drum rolls were not as well delivered as say the Scanspeaks did.
Shreekanth then played a drums test disc of his which comprised a piece with heavy and fast drum beats and esanthosh, denom , here you have a system that can do Drums from Hell of Meshuggah and the like.
The delicious food at Shreekanths place ensured that taste buds and jaws were working overtime along with our ears.
We wrapped our session and proceeded to Anil Kumars with Shreekanth too with the group.En route, I remarked to Shreekanth that I am going to call him David from now on, as he is quite the giant killer, as he has, with his speakers, in all his limitations, come up with something that can give many a high end branded speaker a run for its money!

P.S: Sadly no pictures were taken at Sreekanths place.

Anil Kumars DIY speakers with Vintage amps

Anil is another DIyer who I have been dying to meet. I admire the passion behind all his speaker builds and auditioning his creations was one of the highlights of this trip.
The Almighty has been quite kind to us in the fact that all our hosts treated us to finger lickin good food along with beautiful music!
Anils set up:
Source: Onkyo LD player dx v370
Amp: pioneer sa 9100/Yamaha ca6100(?)/Technics mini hi fi
Speakers: DiY Bass Reflex FS, TL Small Thors FS, Kef FS

So we start off playing our standard fare. The Marantz test disc goes in:
Anils own speakers, not the small thors, are connected.
Here comes the rain again : These speakers paint on a huge canvas and fill up Anils living room effortlessly. The mids were a bit lacking with a slight edginess to the voice. Separation and resolution overall were awesome.
Chinese Drums track: These babies kick some serious rear end with percussion! They go down deep and low, and are very clean while at it! Even our Manu bhai would bow down!
Taal se Taal Mila: The sub frequencies in the beginning are no sweat for this speaker. However when the rest of the band pip in with the heavy drums, there is a slight muddling/confusion.
Again Alka Yagnik sounds a bit shrill here but all the details come through without fail. The treble on this track is quite (over)energetic and on this set up becomes a bit too harsh for my liking.

Thats me putting the wheels in motion er putting the cd in the tray to start off with the session at Anil Kumars place

Dhan Dhan Dharti: Sonu Nigam: The male vocal on this is very powerful, but it sounded thin on the set up. The underlying synth bass and drums however were very well rendered.
We play Micheal Shrieves Sorcerer and the speakers devour it with ease. Brilliant panache with percussion and the enveloping sound is what characterize these.
Devdas theme song: Good details levels, but a bit congested here. The whip in the midst of this track was something I thought these could deliver with realism but it lacked the bite I expected, though it was way above par.
We switched to the Small thors, Anils TL design. The same tracks and some others were played on these. The Small Thors are not as exciting as the Bass reflex nor do they go as low, but they sound more balanced with stronger mids and sweeter highs. This was felt with Keith urban and Diana Krall.-Temptation.
We played much more music on these, but I am limiting myself , as time is less and I guess everybodys patience is wearing thin waiting for me to post, so that they can also join in with their inputs. Also, with all the stuff happening, my memory is working overtime to make sense of the whole thing!
Overall, I would say Anils speakers have to be heard to be believed, again they would trump most of the branded costing twice or thrice. If the mids were stronger and highs a bit more tame, Anils BR would be just shy of being on the perfect speaker list like Shreekanths creation. So would the Small Thors if coupled with a good, fast TL sub.

Saikats MF A1-Nad c321-MA BR5 set up

From Anils place, en route to ARN, where a patient Sridhar was tolerating deadlines being flouted one after the other, we made a quick stop at Saikats to listen to his set up. I was a bit tired, with a slight headache and I couldnt help stuffing myself to the gills with the lovely food that Anils better half made for us. So golden ears was kinda in passive mode, he he.
Saikats set up:
Source: Nad c521b cdp, Sony TT
Amp: Music Fidelity A1 Class A amp
Speakers: Monitor Audio BR5 floorstanders
I had to miss a bit of the session due to a phone call too. But I remember that Eva Cassidy singing Fields of Gold( right Saikat?) sounded beautiful:licklips: on it. There was a whole lot of echo in the room:mad: though and this did mess up things on more louder/complex stuff.
Devdas theme was presented in detail but the echo again made it a bit fatiguing. But the imaging esp at the end where the cup rolls on the floor, was awesome.:ohyeah:
Saikat also hooked up his TT to the phono stage of his MF a1. However it seemed like it was having a moody day, and Private Investigations-Dire straits sounded very much muffled.
We took a coupla pics on Rallynuts cam phone and I request him to post the same.

Overall, it came across as a detailed and balanced set up, with good vocals, marred by the room echo which was playing spoil sport. The BR5 can punch way better than their petite size make you believe.

@all,for me,it HAS to be sreekanth's speakers that take the cake.i absolutely love that sound,so wonderfully balanced, amazing.factor in the diy, transmission line application(am in love with that),in-house drivers too,and there not much that can take their place.sreekanth,ur my next and possibly last stop in speaker hunts.folks, must mention that suri's and anil's are right up there, very small margins/leanings in the choices.its almost like a luxury car shootout.which does one buy,the mercedes S/the bmw 7/the audi a8 :p??!!!and just because u've chosen one of them, does it mean that the others are no good :o????see my point???

anil's application was a revelation, for me,as to how low a bass reflex speaker could go :o.you would be hard pressed, nay,u would think im lying if after listening to them i let you in on the fact that there's no sub involved.that darn low.the small thors, didn really do it for me,and i supect drivers being new, required a min of 100hrs on them to,shine.my opinion will probably change then.all in all,the vintage amps lend a beautiful dynamic range/body to his speakers.anil,u have some fine skills there :clapping:,the proof is in the listen.

at saikat's place, room issues not withstanding,i just could not believe that the BR5's were so damn small!!!and sounded quite good too, while all the time reminding u as to how damn tiny they were to be putting out sound like that!!!!love ur setup saikat, its a great starter for you,and hope u have done something about our ideas regarding the 3 walls.enjoy the music brother ;)

p.s,as for snaps at saikats place, srry folks,so hard to post snaps without my pc hanging/power out here, have our fantastic bsnl connection and electicity board to thank .probs with living in miniscule towns u see,i guess i should be glad that i even have power/the internet .cheers

Thanks Hiten and Rem :)

Yup they're quite tall and slim indeed. Quite a presence in the room.

Yeah Hiten handling tubes gotta be extra careful. I've got a spare cloth that I always use to handle them. Designing a box for em also slowly otherwise too many bubble wrapped packages lying around...

Hi Titus,

Did you try Opeth numbers which you've carried on any of the setups you have auditioned in Bangalore? I am interested to know how Acoustic Portraits performed. For that matter, how did you find Opeth numbers on your newly acquired AP TC-2s? Is there a post/thread of yours reviewing your new TC-2s?

I see myself acquiring TC-2s in near future. Want to know what Golden Ears has to say.

Thanks to Trio kutties and every Bengaloorian for making this Dhvani Rath successful. Had darshan of all hema hemis of dhvani tatha drishti raths.:clapping:

Venkat
