There is a big big role of Pre-amplifier. If your Pre-amplifier gives you sufficient gain, it is possible to drive speakers like ATC, Harbeth etc with medium powered SET amplifiers.ATC are power hungery speakers and will not be compatiable with SET. With SET amp you must have speakers which are 97+db.
I drive my Harbeth 40.2 with Audio note Tube amplifier (211 tube). It is a mesmerizing combo. Yes I use a high gain tube Pre-amplifier. I have tried them in rooms bigger than decent sized rooms and it works.
But I have never tried them in 40 ft x40 ft sized rooms.
With low gain Pre-amplifier, it struggles a lot and it becomes evident in the music presentation.
