I am thinking of buying Audioengine A5 speakers. I have no questions about their sound quality etc but what I am worried about is whether they would be too powerful when placed next to the compute monitor. So if you own these speakers, can you please tell me your experience in this regard?

PS - I am currently using Altec Lansing ATP3.

too powerful? what does that mean? are you worried about magnetic interference with your monitor? or it being "too loud". About the former, i think they are shielded. About the latter, there is the volume control. You can use it.

I am worried about them being too loud. The volume control is there but then I am thinking whether to go for A2s in that case.

The A2s are a great deal for the price as well, but the A5s go lower and have a fuller sound, so even at a lower volume the A5 will sound better. But if budget is a constraint, then the A2 makes for very good desktop speakers.

I was hoping if someone who owned A5s could give their opinion as well. But looks like it shouldn't be a problem to put A5s on the desktop.

I own both a2 and a5 and i totally agree with the above. If only budget is a constraint then go for a2, since a5 has fuller sound and sounds very good at low or high volume both.

I've had the A5s for a month now.I am extremely satisfied with the purchase and have now placed an order for the AS8 subwoofer. However, you would need a desktop the size of a dining table to place the A5s on!:)I've placed them 6 ft apart to maximize the sound stage.

A quick note though.

I owned an A2 for the last one year. The first piece i had soon had a problem with its power brick. This I have seen is not uncommon. Many magazines ( e.g stereophile) said that their review pieces would go bunk. Thankfully it was immediately replaced (a year back that is).

Things seem to have changed now. 3 months back the A2's developed a "crackle " in one of the speaker ( i guess an Amp issue, for one channel). The ordeal since then has been quite harassing to say the bit. To cut it short, I am yet to get my corrected piece back/or replaced.

This apparently is due to a dearth in the units being stocked in India. I am in touch with AudioEngine USA, and so far they have been helpless too. One of the reasons for this also seems to be that some of the Amp related problems are too common, leading to too many replacements.

I will love to know if AudioProducts ( india dealer) or bajaoo.com is able to sell you a piece. Let me know, coz then they should be able manage my replacement as well[:)].

Its a product of great engineering, but in my experience well scathed by a shoddy marketing/sales support. ( mind you i mean india alone). probably their issue are genuine, but you should watch out.

did they agree to replace? I assume most of the products once brought home are your own responsibility if they go bad after the warranty period.

i may have been one of the early adopters of the A2 on this forum. I owned it for about 8-9 months before upgrading, and it was my first taste of good sound. It's superb value for money, but yes I've heard they have some QC issues, so that's a bit of a downer.

I reported the problem in May, and at that time it was still under warranty. So they did agree to replace. The problem of having to deal with this after warrenty gives me shudders.

For excellent sound that won't break the bank, the 5 Star Award Winning Wharfedale Diamond 12.1 Bookshelf Speakers is the one to consider!
