KODI a.k.a XMBC Supported 4K-3D Android Players Discussion Thread

I used to play most of the movies via PS3 and now with the advent of 4K and about to arrive 4K tv , i wanted a better player.

While i was searching i came across this chart and kodi players. I would love to see more discussion on these players , not specific for the interest of many here. AS of now ,there are no BD players CMIIW which can support 4k.. so its better to get a dedicated player which can output 4k/3d and all kinds of audio output for future proof.

So android based are pretty much easy to upgrade and install things as we like , we could base our discussion to ones which support support to it.

The main problem as per kodi forum users is , if the media player is cheap , then it all depends on firmware / software and dependency on manufacturer , even though the specs are great.

Another problem is availability , it is kind of hard to get and many are on aliexpress website , which many arent comfortable with.

Any other suggestion or experience with these players ?

Bought this player from USA recently. Kodi is installed and it supports almost all android apps. Also if need be we can completely customize this player as per our requirement. Costs around $220.

Before jumping towards a 4k player, its better to judge the player's HDMI bandwidth. Most of the 4k players available these days are providing 4k resolution@30Hz over HDMI 1.4.
HDMI 2.0 is only capable to output 4k@60Hz.

Most UHD TVs support HDMI 2.0. But what about the player? Does it support at all?

AFAIK, the cheapest possible option for HDMI 2.0 would be an HTPC with GTX 960 (other cards would be GTX 970, 980, 980Ti, Titan-X) graphics card where the card itself costs around $200. AMD has no such thing called HDMI 2.0. Lol!

So please research thoroughly before investing on any cheap 4k media player.

^ Actually Roku 4 (https://www.roku.com/products/roku-4) does it, including HEVC i.e. H265, and its only $129.

Ditto for NVIDIA SHIELD doing 4K, HEVC, etc., but its priced at $199.

But both use custom OS, Roku modified Linux and Nvidia modified Android, so no Kodi/XMBC.

A HTPC always gets my vote, way more configurable and upgradeable.

I think it will take at least 3-4 years before 4K becomes common in India. At that time we should be ready for a complete overhaul of our HT.

A good option possibly is the Xiaomi MI 3rd Gen Andorid TV Box. You get it near about Rs.5K and support 4K @60Hz.
Some seller is selling it on Ebay India.

Anyone has experience with Ptron smart box (Full HD, not 4k) sold in latestone.com? It looks exactly similar to MXQ box. I think they are importing mxq and selling in India in different name.

I got it from aliexpress.

The diff between MXQ PRO and MXQ (in the link) is that pro supports 4K@60fps. For that you need HDMI 2.0. It also comes with Android Lollipop. Just MXQ supports limited 4k@30fps and HDMI 1.4(?) and comes with kitkat. Its suitable if you don't have 4k plans in your radar for near future.

I purchased Himedia Q5 from Amazon.in...

I have no 4k tv so not tested... except that everything very nice. HEVC, usb 3.0 powerful hardware... nice.
But when I played The Good Dinosaur movie on this... 5.1 channel surround not divided properly!!!!! I felt very bad. I don't know if I am missing some settings from this player or not. Or I have to change any settings on my Denon avr x1200?

I recently purchased Cubek 4K hd media player, from Amazon for Rs.5400/- all inclusive on C.O.D. basis. I do not have UHD television and hence can not comment on UHD performance, but the HD performance is excellent. It has Kodi built-in and works wonderful.

Remote is provided, however using wireless mouse makes things easier & convenient.
