the one thing i have realized about this forum is the eclectic nature of the opinions expressed...
the profundity of our preoccupation is not so much the vehicle of the delivery (read hardware) but the content that we invite into our machines...
therefore humbly i would request forum members to share the lines that inspired them , provoked them and generally made them as thankful to the science out there as to the creativity that gives purpose to those enterprises...

i would begin with this Lanston Hughes' lines..

What happens to a dream deferred?
Does it dry up?
like a raisin in the sun?
Or does it fester like a sore-
And then run?
Does it stink like rotten meat?
Or crust and sugar over-
like a syrup sweet?

Maybe it just sags
like a heavy load.

Or does it explode?

hi moktan,

off the cuff this comes to mind by alice cooper 'i'm running up a down escalator, i'm going nowhere fast'.

pretty much seems to encapsulate the rushed lives i'm seeing so many people around me living. very few people enjoy the journey, instead they're trying to get someplace fast and when they get there, they're gonna be old and then perhaps realize that they ought to have slowed down a bit to smell the roses along the way, look at the spring blossoms on trees on the way to office or just enjoy the many small unnoticed moments that give one pleasure.

pretty deep philosophy from someone like alice cooper eh? :)

I swear by their holiness - Pink Floyd. Apart from the music, here's why -

Dark Side of the Moon
Visceral lyrics, especially when they go -
Time
"So you run and you run to catch up with the sun but it's sinking
Racing around to come up behind you again.
The sun is the same in a relative way but you're older,
Shorter of breath and one day closer to death."

Us and Them
"Down and out
It can't be helped but there's a lot of it about.
With, without.
And who'll deny it's what the fighting's all about?"

The Final Cut
Two Suns in the Sunset
This one is scary - what if you saw the dreaded "mushroom cloud" in your rearview mirror ???
"The sun is in the east
Even though the day is done.
Two suns in the sunset
Hmmmmmmmmmm
Could be the human race is run."

The Wall
Mother
Pretty apt description of the kind of idiotic censorship we are subjected to -
"Mama's gonna check out all your girlfriends for you.
Mama wont let anyone dirty get through.
Mama's gonna wait up until you get in.
Mama will always find out where you've been.
Mama's gonna keep baby healthy and clean."

Animals
Dogs
This is what "trust" has become today -
"You gotta be able to pick out the easy meat with your eyes closed.
And then moving in silently, down wind and out of sight,
You gotta strike when the moment is right without thinking.
And after a while, you can work on points for style.
Like the club tie, and the firm handshake,
A certain look in the eye and an easy smile.
You have to be trusted by the people that you lie to,
So that when they turn their backs on you,
You'll get the chance to put the knife in."

Wish You Were Here
Shine on you Crazy Diamond
Quite simply, the entire song .........

Very nice thread, Moktan. Captures the essence of our shared endeavour in a thread.

Off hand, I dont remember. But I will keep adding to this hopefully as we go on.

1) Working Class Hero by Green day.

2) Kabhi Kabhi Mere Dil Mein - Kabhi Kabhi

3) Main Pal do Pal ka Shair hoon - Kabhi Kabhi

the profundity of our preoccupation is not so much the vehicle of the delivery (read hardware) but the content that we invite into our machines...

this thread - moktan - will attract them - those who will make us cry with the beauty and expanse of their imagination - those sufis (who wonder if the world would be different if man was not limited by six senses - and, instead, had a hundred and twenty one senses)

But - i must confess that - for I - that vehicle of delivery - the last in the chain- the loudspeaker - is my only preoccupation- and i will (god willing) make the best two-way (passive) loudspeaker in this world - this world in which there are people who make beautiful music with meaning:)

regds

i am sorry moktan - that the content of this post is not........

but you are my friend till i die (or till you do) - so i had to ......

moktan, very nice thread indeed. For me, the song that started my quest to build a decent ht / music setup is My Way, by Elvis Presley. This song is originally a French song, but translated to English by Paul Anka and sung first by Frank Sinatra. But I like the Elvis Presley version most of all and is the song I hear every day. God willing, I will have a stereo setup in the near future that will make Elvis sing this straight to my heart.

The song is about a man who is at the end of his life and recounts the fact that he lived his life his way, faced everything head on and did not give up his dignity. While I am not old enough to think about death yet, this song makes me thankful for what I have and keeps reminding me that this is my life, I have to live it the way I want to and avoid regrets at the end of my days. The entire lyrics are my favorite so I'm taking the liberty of pasting it in full:

And now the end is near
So I face the final curtain
My friend, I'll say it clear
I'll state my case of which I'm certain

I've lived a life that's full
I've traveled each and every highway
And more, much more than this
I did it my way

Regrets, I've had a few
But then again, too few to mention
I did what I had to do
And saw it through without exception

I planned each charted course
Each careful step along the byway
Oh, and more, much more than this
I did it my way

Yes, there were times, I'm sure you know
When I bit off more than I could chew
But through it all when there was doubt
I ate it up and spit it out
I faced it all and I stood tall
And did it my way

I've loved, I've laughed and cried
I've had my fails, my share of losing
And now as tears subside
I find it all so amusing
To think I did all that
And may I say, not in a shy way
Oh, no, no not me
I did it my way

For what is a man, what has he got
If not himself, then he has not
To say the words he truly feels
And not the words he would reveal
The record shows I took the blows
And did it my way
The record shows I took the blows
And did it my way

regards,
thekinge

Simon & Garfunkel
The Boxer
In the clearing stands a boxer
And a fighter by his trade
And he carries the reminders
Of ev'ry glove that layed him down
Or cut him till he cried out
In his anger and his shame
"I am leaving, I am leaving"
But the fighter still remain

Bridge over troubled water
I'll take your part
When darkness comes
And pain is all around
Like a bridge over troubled water
I will lay me down

Flowers Never Bend With The Rainfall
The mirror on my wall
Casts an image dark and small
But I'm not sure at all it's my reflection.
I am blinded by the light
Of God and truth and right
And I wander in the night without direction.

Kathy's Song
I hear the drizzle of the rain
Like a memory it falls
Soft and warm continuing
Tapping on my roof and walls
And from the shelter of my mind
Through the window of my eyes
I gaze beyond the rain-drenched streets
To England where my heart lies

And of course, the ultimate ode to loneliness and the two most hard hitting lines (IMO) in their entire repertoire :-
I am a Rock
And a rock feels no pain;
And an island never cries.

I am Libran and so I have an in-curable romantice personality........all I can share are utmost romantice lines for the people blessed with love (My own creations)..........

My Love; a tender smile with a crystal dew on her fragile lips,
My Love; an intangible cascade falling far from a mountain tip,
My Love; a soft feeling with the rose fragrance of her gentle touch,
My Love; a serene serenade sung in the springs by a pretty thrush,
My Love; a holy rainbow with the colors of faint twilight,
My Love; a sole with the purity only in God's site,
My Love; a pearl with oyster of the lands of fairy,
My Love; Its YOU with the beauty of an elusive lady
........Sam

Love is kind, Love is bold,
Love has all the beauty, a lady can hold,
Love has all the colors, a rainbow can show,
Love has all the love, that it needs to grow,
Love has all the notes a song can sing,
Love has all the depth an ocean can bring.
The prettiest feeling, ever on earth is love,
The softest cushion, you feel is love,
Love makes life like, starry skies,
Dipped in your love's mesmerizing eyes.
The warm tug, here and there you feel,
The power to do and the power to heel,
Love becomes the desire to live,Love becomes the desire to give,
The most passionate feeling ever on earth,
Is the desire to give, and the desire to love?
So Love, but with sincerity,Devotion and purity,
Be your love, stand by you and shine,
Always remaining honest true and divine
.,............Sam

And this is one of my fav.......a song called ROSE

Some say love, it is a river that drowns the tender reed.
Some say love, it is a razor that leaves your soul to bleed.
Some say love, it is a hunger, an endless aching need.
I say love, it is a flower, and you it's only seed.
It's the heart, afraid of breaking, that never learns to dance.
It's the dream, afraid of waking, that never takes a chance.
It's the one who won't be taken, who cannot seem to give.
And the soul, afraid of dying, that never learns to live.
When the night has been too lonely, and the road has been too long,
And you think that love is only for the lucky and the strong,
Just remember in the winter far beneath the bitter snows,
Lies the seed, that with the sun's love, in the spring becomes the rose.

...Regards
Sammy

thanks sammy for the wonderful poem....you have so much to say on love without sounding mushy...

though haven't heard much of Dylan being discussed here in the forum thought i would share the lyrics of a long time favorite from the man...

VISIONS OF JOANNA
Ain't it just like the night to play tricks when you're tryin' to be so quiet?
We sit here stranded, though we're all doin' our best to deny it
And Louise holds a handful of rain, temptin' you to defy it
Lights flicker from the opposite loft
In this room the heat pipes just cough
The country music station plays soft
But there's nothing, really nothing to turn off
Just Louise and her lover so entwined
And these visions of Johanna that conquer my mind

In the empty lot where the ladies play blindman's bluff with the key chain
And the all-night girls they whisper of escapades out on the "D" train
We can hear the night watchman click his flashlight
Ask himself if it's him or them that's really insane
Louise, she's all right, she's just near
She's delicate and seems like the mirror
But she just makes it all too concise and too clear
That Johanna's not here
The ghost of 'lectricity howls in the bones of her face
Where these visions of Johanna have now taken my place

Now, little boy lost, he takes himself so seriously
He brags of his misery, he likes to live dangerously
And when bringing her name up
He speaks of a farewell kiss to me
He's sure got a lotta gall to be so useless and all
Muttering small talk at the wall while I'm in the hall
How can I explain?
Oh, it's so hard to get on
And these visions of Johanna, they kept me up past the dawn

Inside the museums, Infinity goes up on trial
Voices echo this is what salvation must be like after a while
But Mona Lisa musta had the highway blues
You can tell by the way she smiles
See the primitive wallflower freeze
When the jelly-faced women all sneeze
Hear the one with the mustache say, "Jeeze
I can't find my knees"
Oh, jewels and binoculars hang from the head of the mule
But these visions of Johanna, they make it all seem so cruel

The peddler now speaks to the countess who's pretending to care for him
Sayin', "Name me someone that's not a parasite and I'll go out and say a prayer for him"
But like Louise always says
"Ya can't look at much, can ya man?"
As she, herself, prepares for him
And Madonna, she still has not showed
We see this empty cage now corrode
Where her cape of the stage once had flowed
The fiddler, he now steps to the road
He writes ev'rything's been returned which was owed
On the back of the fish truck that loads
While my conscience explodes
The harmonicas play the skeleton keys and the rain
And these visions of Johanna are now all that remain
