Lets talk about AVR Fundamentals

Friends, in this age of features, its important that people approach their equipments with a view to understanding their fundamentals.

Isn't that what educated people do?

So, talking of AVRs, I'm unable to find out its fundamentals on the Internet. And it should be presented in a simple way.

As I understand, it does three things...
- Decode encoded audio (dolby, dts etc.)
- Convert these digital streams to analog
- Amplify these streams

Let's at least get the basic fundamentals right.

The good thing is that having understood this you can accomplish it in a way that suits your situation.
For e.g two of these can be done in HTPCs saving money where budget is a limitation.
Additionally, you get satisfaction.

I request others to pitch in and lets unravel this thing. Lets understand all the fundamentals.

I assure you that you don't need to worry or be hesitant.

Do you want to prepare a business case for AVRs? Anyways, you can add the following to the list:
- Video upscaling
- Video conversion (composite/component to full-HD or beyond)
- Multiple input switching
- Cross assignment of video and audio inputs etc
- Room correction etc...
If you keep on adding up the individual features, I am sure no HTPC will ever come closer to an AVR. You can get more features from the manual of any half decent AVR in the market today.

If one needs just the Audio decoding, he/she may plonk a 5/7 stream amp at the end of the HTPC chain and be happy. Why bother?

Your case is included as only avr has functions that you want.

Now your list...
- Video upscaling.. is there in computers
- Video conversion (composite/component to full-HD or beyond)... ok accepted, but its more of a function than a fundamental thing.
- Multiple input switching... choice not a necessity.
- Cross assignment of video and audio inputs etc... choice not a necessity.
- Room correction etc...available in computers.

Not sure what you are getting at. You started with whats the fundamentals of an AVR and now when there are options available in an AVR mentioned, you are sayings its a choice. In that sense everything is a choice.

Is your objective to understand AVR or to prove HTPC can replace an AVR or something else?

Based on your objectives, it will be easier for others to contribute.
 
Primarily an avr as the acronym suggests, it's an Audio Video Receiver. It is primarily a component that can receive a signal from muktio Source components. The input signals if digital are processed and sent out to appropriate components.

It could be put in a more simpler sentence, I could not.
