LG's flagship BD player BD690 featuring a 250GB internal hard drive released in US.
I was very impressed with the features. There is not much details on the region.
( I think it is region locked.)

It will be region locked. Though we have to look at the features, 250GB is nothing nowadays when 3 TB drives are available. 250Gb will get filled before you leave the room.

Cheers

yah i know that. i have 1 TB hard drives ( 2 numbers ) and both are filled.
Considering xtreamer prodigy is getting released in september, i thought this blu ray player is good to play Blu ray disc, Video files ( most formats ) and has a hard drive. Keep all movies in a 3TB hard drive and transfer only those which u need to watch. Had there been no region lock, i was game for it :)

With Blu-Ray drives forming part of media players, I feel the life of dedicated Blu-Ray players are very limited. They will go the way of Tape Drives very quickly. I see a merging of computers and players - what with BD-Live, Networking and all that. Players of the future will focus more on these aspects than that of playing a disc, which will become incidental. It is just that more easy for manufacturers to make a small motherboard, use a media player chip, and then just add a disc player.

hmm, i had similar thoughts. But when i calculated the amount of money spent in downloading movies, power , hard drive, i thought buying blu ray disc is the same ( of course the price should be 5 - 6 dollars per disc).
I see the street price of good blu ray movies ( 2 -3 years ) old are coming down to 5 - 7 dollars. As you said even if u buy a media player to which we can add blu ray drives, i think it is better to buy Blu ray disc and have it for life long rather than having it in drives ( never know when it crashes ).

True, but a media player with a Blu-Ray drive gives you both options.

I have over 6 TB of movies. I also have over 1000 movies across DVDs and Blu-Rays. What I do is to rip a movie I like and see it multiple times as a media file. Other movies are seen once and kept away.

Cheers

One simple question...How many guys in india have atleast a 1mbps connection? Even with 1 mbps connection, they have this fair usage policy which limits your speed and amount downloadable....In india what ever you say, it takes hell lot of time for the technology to be wide spread...And most of the people don't even know what is blu ray, 1080p,etc ......i never trust hard disk drives....especially new ones..... From my experience the disc i have burnt early part of 2000, is still working...yes it takes a bit more space....

You Are Absolutely Right! Good quality Bluray ISO (35gb-46gb) downloading are very costly. It some time cost more than a bluray disc.

What would be a wise decision? Buying a dedicated BluRay Player or a BluRay Drive/Burner for existing HTPC?
