My Cambridge receiver continues to have a slight issue. Also its a few years old and therefore does not have some of the features like the newer models. Im therefore looking to replace it to power a 5.1 Dynaudio Audience setup which includes Audience 82 in front.

Any suggestions for a lac or under?

The new Marantz and Denons have some features like Airplay and MP3 sq improvement which are attractive to me....Do any of the higher end manufacturers have these as well?

Will moving to Marantz or Denon be a drop down in terms of SQ?

Thanks

You are not getting anywhere closer to the Dynaudio's performance by driving them with a receiver. They like power and would definitely shine with decent 150 watts at a minimum. Also they are 4 ohm so you are risking big time for any receiver to conk out when driving them.

There's a Sunfire TGR III 7.1 amp on sale for about 1.2L in the classifieds here. That might do a good job with the Dyns. I don't think it supports all those fancy surround formats, though.

Look for a NAD T785 AVR which is a High Current AVR based on NAD's MDC Design which makes it upgradable with future technological upgrades.

How much do the NADs cost and what would provide for a better sound experience in a 300 - 400 sq ft room?

NAD T 785 is a Top of the Line AVR from NAD and can be easily compared to Arcam and the likes, its retailed around 2.5L. And its more than capable of powering the Dynaudio Speakers with authority and finesse.

What would you suggest?

It depends on other components on your system, your room setup, listening interests and of course your budget.

Also I have seen some mentions of using your CA as a power amp. Personally I dont think this is a good idea as the amp's in receivers are usually not very powerful atleast to drive the Dynaudio.

I would suggest a good integrated or a separte power amp and leave the processing to your CA or get a pre-amp.

There are a lot of choices for the integrated or power amps, look for something that is not bright. Some things that come to mind across different budgets:

Adcom, Sunfire, Outlaw, Yamaha, CA, Creek, NAD, Arcam, Bel Canto, Rotel, Parasound, Bryston, McCormack, Musical Fidelity.

Also I have seen some mentions of using your CA as a power amp.

I made that suggestion, based on the fact that his speakers are currently driven by the same AVR, and if he is happy, then the amps of this AVR are powerful enough to drive his speakers.
But nothing like a shining new AVR or pre/ pro instead of "juggad". NAD is a wonderful AVR I have heard it a couple of times at Lakozy, though not with these speakers.

Hello,

I've found a NAD 785 avr available at a really good price. Sparingly used for 90k.

T 785 A/V Surround Sound Receiver - NAD Electronics

Would like some more opinions before buying it. Some people have said its impossible for a AVR to drive these speakers justifiably and others feel that this receiver should suffice and have mentioned this as one model of receiver that would.

My questions are:

1. Does a receiver like this with Torroidal transformers match the performance of power amps with similar 120 at 8 ohm ratings

2. This receiver seems to mention the same output at 8 and 4 ohms. Is that possible or will the output rise at 4 ohms.

3. I heard about issues with NAD receiver reliability. Anyone on the forum seen this to be true?

4. How well do NADS pair with dynaudio. Once again I've heard mixed things

5. This receiver has numerous power ratings on its data sheet. These include
200W x 7 (FTC) Power
7 x 120W Minimum Continuous Power into 4/8 ohms, all channels driven simultaneously 20Hz 20kHz at <0.05%THD (NAD Full Disclosure Power)
The amplifier section of the T-785 is capable of driving low impedance loads and is rated for 4 ohm nominal loads, but has been tested on loads as low as 2 ohm nominal impedance. Power output by the T-785 has been rated against multiple standards, coming in at 200 watts per channel via FTC (1 kHz at 8 ohms), 120 watts multi-channel across the full audio range (20 Hz- 20 kHz), as well as 170 watts when driving a stereo configuration

Please explain the difference between FTC and full disclosure power

6. Would you choose this receiver for dynaudio audience 82 speakers or would you say use a smaller receiver (for surrounds( and spend the rest on a 2 channel power amp. Options for power amp include Bryston, Odyssey, Jaton and a few others that are available for under 1 lac

PLease comment. Thanks

@rise, the avr + 2 channel power amp route will probably work better. I don't think the Nad will do the trick with the 82s

4lacs or 8k $ should get one the top of the line pre-pros....Out of curiosity what receiver is 4 lacs Rishi?

For the excellent Dynaudio HT speaker setup, IMO, the correct AVR for the job would be the ARCAM AVR-600 but this is an expensive baby.

Nevertheless, their jnr bro, the AVR-400 will also cut in perfectly well & do a fantastic job.

The Arcams are spl, unfussed & stupendously good sounding with real-time features that work well.

It would be silly not to consider them.

P.S. all Arcams have a 115-230V selector on the back panel. You can buy from anywhere.
