Hello All,

Just about a year back I bought the Marantz NR1506, set it up about a few months back with Monitor Audio Mass 5.1. Things were going swimmingly smooth but just about a day back, the display on the TV just went blank.
So tried various permutations and combinations i.e. disconnected the HDMI and attached another HDMI cable between the Marantz and the TV but no joy.
There are 2 more connections to the Marantz besides the Tata Sky box i.e. CCTV and Blue Ray Player. Neither was displayed.
So did the next best thing - directly connected the Tata Sky box to the TV and was able to get video.
I did every thing possible, read up the manual did a hard reset i.e. press m-dax and preset tuner+ while powering on the unit. It says initialising on the display and then leave the two buttons (factory setting the unit), yet again no joy whatsoever.
So guys, any clue on what could be wrong? There was no voltage fluctuation, neither we heard a sound or a loud click or anything whatsoever to even indicate there was a malfunction in the Marantz unit, yet it went dead or so I am thinking.

It is within the warranty and I am going to call on MZ Distributors at Bandra, Mumbai which have been nominated as the authorised distributors (on Marantz website), but this post is just to pick the brains of somebody who has encountered this before or some other way to solve the issue. I really am a bit disappointed with Marantz since most reviews put it as the best with little or no such serious malfunction ever reported on any of websites that I had gone through before purchasing and yet.
Anyways, will be waiting to hear from anybody out there.
Thanks

hi

The obvious option is to contact MZ audio immediately and get this checked,,,email them and also call them...speak to Sayeed...

Digital signals are very tricky and so are HDMI cables....try reconnecting everything slowly as if you are hooking up a new AVR...the new 1506 series is 2.0 or 2.2 version so very touchy in terms of connectivity..ensure that the cables are not folded or bent too much.....

I have faced no issue till date between various models over the last 6 years now.....

Set top box should be hooked to the TV directly to TV and TV out which would be optical should be fed to the AVR....this also ensures protection of the HDMI board....

Hai re meri phooti kismet!!! :-)
It has to happen with me and it is not even a year complete, but then should thank my lucky stars that it is within the year or else would have been really hopping mad.
Thanks for your post, but is there anything that I am not doing correctly? I did the connections myself along with a friend of mine - but then it doesn't look like rocket science not being able to get the connections done.
But then if I wasn't, it wouldn't have been going so well for the last couple of months.
So does MZ send its person home or I have to take the unit over to him?
Just hope that the unit hasn't malfunctioned or some capacitor or resistor has not given way.
Whew, thanks once again.

If they deduce it to be voltage surge related, it will not be covered under warranty

@ sachinvmehta

You will have to take it to MZ Audio Bandra after you email / call them.....

Try connecting only the blu ray player after reset and see if it works....do it slowly step by step.....if it does not work then no choice but to go to MZ audio.....

most likely hdmi board is fried. distributor has technician to do board level repair so cost should not be as high as whole board replacement. go with unti to get idea of what will be outcome and cost involved.

Funny way these electronics function.

So MZ came over and checked the system and said that there is no issue with the HDMI. Apparently, the unit was on auto upgrade/update through the internet (and here we are talking about connected units and IOT) due to which the firmware upgraded on its own and hold your breath - failed and thus this has led to the issue.
This is what I have been told. Now the next part. He has taken the unit and has told me that they would look to update it at their end and chances are that it would be done or else the board if it might have failed need to be replaced (under warranty, so hopefully won't cost).
Now guys, first things first, are these guys reliable? Is it safe to hand over my unit to them, believing that they don't tinker around with the unit and replace components? Also, what guarantee that just a basic update and they might come back and tell me that the board has been replaced? So what pre-empting should I do?
I did ask for my presence at the time when the testing was being done but the main technician (Akbar) refused and said that this might take the whole day.
So what are the immediate next steps?
I just don't want to get gypped in this, more so when there is little understanding of the technicalities involved and even more so when I have spent a neat 45K on the unit.
Akbar told that they now liaison with the European unit of Marantz and would need to take a go-ahead from them for any change of parts.

Input guys and preferably on the double. Thanks in advance.

Been there... Felt that. In the absence of strong consumer laws and enforcement what all we have to face for simple pleasures of life

can go either way. very easy for them to say part faulty etc, but if they charge you for that then that's bad as your unit is under warranty. caveat emptor always is power related issues do not get covered under warranty (in India atleast)

since you have handed over unit, nothing you can do now but hope for the best

Am trying to pre-empt a bit. Have also put in a mail on the DM Global website.
There is this Asia Pac Head responsible for sales Terrie O'Connell (whose email id I was trying to get online, but to no avail). I guess, once the leadership team knows about what happens in the 'mofussil' areas it might rouse them up for action.

Sachin, not spooking you here! For what it's worth...Some moons ago I bought the Marantz PM/CD5004 units from HF Mart. Soon after, the cd player developed disc tracking issues and would cop out with "No Disc" messages. As it was under warranty, I shipped the unit from Hyderabad to MZ, who fixed it under warranty but charged me courier charges stating I did not provide the proper paperwork to the courier guys and that they had to pay from their pocket to receive the unit at Mumbai. As I had no choice, I had to shell out ~1500 bucks just to get the unit repaired. The player has been flawless since then! I have heard from other sources that MZ is expensive. Lakozy might be a better bet.

If your unit is under warranty, they have to repair it free of cost!

Good luck with it.

Hi

MZ is listed as Authorised seller for Marantz......they will repair / replace under warranty....

Please speak to AshrafBhai (Owner) or his son (Sayeed)...both are nice gentlemen and approachable....

I am aware that some have had bad experiences.....Akbar is their right hand technician....if you need assurances, speak to Sayeed who will ensure....customer first is his principal....

Hallelujah! that is exactly what is happening.
I have little clue on what the internal dynamics of the place is.
So I called up Akbar and he told me that the total cost would be Rs. 1500/- (was a bit taken aback, as to why should I be paying that). Upon asking, he was a bit noncommittal, but said that it was the service charge and other allied things. He asked me to come up and take it, will I get a bill or receipt? Again a non-committal answer - it is under warranty is what was said.
So I called up Sajid (apparently, he is in sales) and he told me to hang on for some time to get back to me on the entire issue. Now the funny part.
I get a call from Akbar just after. He says, why do you want to involve Sajid in the process? He is a sales person, he would want to make more money of you and then I will have to be answering the company? Come to me and take the unit away.
Am completely at sea now. What am I to do? Is anybody at all reliable at MZ? What guarantee that Akbar hasn't played hanky panky with the unit and replaced the board and put in a local part? Why is the need to now make me discuss with Sajid? Is there any solution in sight? I don't mind paying even 2K provided I get a receipt for the same. I exactly need to know, what has happened in the unit and if something has been replaced - it has to be put on paper that it has been replaced.
Should I contact Ashraf or Sayeed? Wouldn't they also make sure that the sales guy Sajid's view is pushed forward, if that is the case. The amount that MZ mainly earns might be because of the service and definitely the owners would look to forward that view.

Recently I have purchased Boston Acoustic A360 from MZ Audio and had interaction with Mr. Sayeed. He is really a gentleman and will help you to solve your problem. You must call him and get help.

Done and dusted. The issue was with the board, as was narrated to me by Akbar. I had no way of checking whether he had changed the board but that is what he claimed - board was changed, think he was talking about the HDMI board. No cost for the board (which costs around 19-20K, according to Akbar) as it was under warranty. When we asked, whether the board was original Marantz stuff, he said that no other board would fit in to that slot and what guarantee that the board was changed and not just update effected, well it was his call and depends on Akbar how and what to report further. Whew!!
Well, I picked up the unit (paid nothing, not even the 1500 that Akbar had indicated before). Working fine till now.
One thing he told me was to not fiddle with the HDMI connections when the unit is on (not that I tried doing it) but he said that the HDMI board is one of the aspects that is a bit soft on the Marantz, otherwise there are little complains on Marantz.
Another thing I was told was to, if possible not to connect the STB (Tata Sky) directly to the AV via an HDMI. I was told that the STB are China made and more often than not they tend to fry the HDMI's of the AV. So heeding to his request I have done a direct connection to the TV and will be looking to attached the Co-axial digital to the AV. Hopefully, the AV is safe in that bargain.
Frankly, I was totally at sea in the entire internal going-on's at MZ.
Anyways, back home and enjoying the Marantz NR1506 and Monitor Audio Mass Speakers.

That's good to hear. Hope you have long innings this time. I wouldn't bother with stb to TV and Coaxial to receiver. Just switch off the stb when not in use and as a precaution power down all components during heavy rain showers.
