Media center?

Hello friends,
Can you please guide me for an appropriate device that can solve my following needs:

1. View digital contents stored on external storage on my TV.
Example - see photos stored on hard disk, watch movies, etc
2. Access digital content stored on hard disk wire-lessly.
Example - use my nexus tablet to access contents from external hard disk

Can u please suggest a suitable product?

I already have a WiFi network at home. Is there any way to connect a hard disk and make its data accessible wirelessly?

I am looking for a central media center/hub that could do these connectivity.

Thanks! I am completely new to media centers. So some pointers to some products should help

Is there anything specific I should keep in mind while getting one?

I would like to:

1) use my nexus 7 tab to play music stored on USB hard drive.
I know I can use foobar remote where tab acts like remote client but I still need my laptop to act like server to which the hard drive gets connected. I want to eliminate the dependency on my laptop. I just want to simplify things.
2) see videos/photos stored on hard drive on TV (Sony bravia EX 300). This is my primary usage. Will be used by family, so need something very simple.

So I was thinking of a device that could act like the central media manager between these devices.
