It was an extreme shock to all audio enthusiasts in Chennai when we came to know on Monday that Mr Sridhar was no more

Sridhar was one of the best sound engineers in India, an entirely self-taught man, highly passionate and committed to the profession. He was the backbone of Rahmans signature sound which contributed greatly to the success of the maestro. Sridhars contribution to Indian cinema is endless. He was the first person to introduce full fledged digital recording based on Pro-tools and Cubase, first person to mix surround sound, bring Dolby Digital and DTS in Indian cinema. A winner of 4 National awards and collaborations with international recording companies, artists and multiple projects with the best directors and composers in India speak volumes about his caliber as a sound engineer. He perfected the art of live sound recoding in movies like Dil Se, Dil Chahta hai, Kannathil, Iruvar, Lagaan, etc which is a great challenge to most sound engineers

An extremely friendly person with a relentless quest for knowledge and an ardent audiophile, Sridhar embraced technology with ease. He knew the compromises he was making when it came to film music. He was well versed in both analog and digital recordings. He hated dynamic compression and when audiophiles asked him why film music levels were so high, he replied that they were forced to mix music for playback primarily on Sun TV and FM channels and not for krell and Conrad Johnson. Once during the screening of Lagaan in one of the theatres in Chennai, he stopped the movie and complained to the management that the sub-woofers were connected out of phase and that the audio was sounding different from the way he had mixed it. It is said that he learnt the acoustic guitar in just 2 years and was a superb musician himself.

His death is an irreplaceable loss for the Indian recording industry. Audiophiles, enthusiasts and sound engineers from Chennai mourn his demise and offer condolences to his family. May his soul rest in peace
