I am planning to use the analog outputs of my Oppo BDP-83 to my AVR. I have heard and read in this forum that one can use digital or analog RCA interconnects. Since the distance is small and I will be needing 6 connections. Do give me your suggestions?

Ideally you should get multi channel audio cables like this one. Unfotunately this may not available that easily in India.

What you can do is to get 3 pairs of good quality 2 channel audio cables. Taking care to note the colors at both ends (player, and AVR), use these cables to create the multi channel analogue connection.

Cheers

You can even get 2 AV cables for same purpose-

I can get those in my travels or ask someone to get it. But for a 5.1 set it comes to around 80USD so seems a bit expensive, will there be perceptive difference between the audio a/v cables and this one?

No, there won't be any difference between 3 good RCA pair or the 5.1 cable you have looked at, the only advantage here with the specialised cable is that its colour coded so you won't do a mistake in connecting them.

Ok, then I will go for it. When you mean good quality RCA, can you qualify it by options, esp. those that are available in India. For ex. would MX be good enough or Bandridge or other brands?

I would look at Bandridge, Eagle, Atlona, at the minimum followed by cables from companies such as QED etc. These would cost you between 1000 to upwards of 4K per pair.

If you can get the BlueJean cables within a reasonable time, it will be good.

Cheers

I connected my bdp to my avr using the analog wires given by default and play it using direct stereo to my speakers so the bdp does all the decoding.

While this sounds excellent playing CD's, the sound is very muted while playing BD or DVD. What could be possible problem? I am downmixing the BDP to output stereo.

Similar issue with me too. I connected the BDP 83 directly to TV using HDMI cable and 5.1 channel to analog input of my AVR (yamaha RXV 661). not able to get the audio trough AVR, but, the picture comes in the TV (sound as well).

If someone can answer these questions for me, it would be a great help.

1. Will I get a better quality audio if I use the analog output of Oppo to connect to my AVR vs. connecting thru HDMI? I'm able to get audio when I connect BDP to AVR thru HDMI and tehn AVR to TV using HDMI.

2. When I set the video out as HDMI in BDP83, does it disable to analog audio outputs?

You have to do 2 things. First you have to set BDP83 as the input for MULTI CH SET (or multi channel set). Since you have connected only 5.1, set the number of input channels as 6.

Second when you are playing, choose MULTI CH IN as your input on the AVR. You will now get the sound.

When you connect an HDMI cable to a TV, you will get both audio and video. if you are using the AVR, set the TV to mute.

Yes you will, primarily because the audio processing capabilities of the Oppo is better than that of the Yamaha 661. It also has a better DAC. You have to use good quality cables, though.

2. When I set the video out as HDMI in BDP83, does it disable to analog audio outputs?

A player usually sends audio and video output in parallel through all it's output ports. Do not play around with these settings. It is better to choose the input setting in the AVR.

1. You can do a A/B testing to check the difference, it will depend upon the audio circuitry of the Oppo versus the Yamaha 461. My guess is that the Oppo would be better. ( I find the analog for CD's better than that of the Yam 459)
2. In your case, one needs to set the HDMI audio to off in the bdp in audio settings.

In my case I am getting the volume, but I need to really crank up the avr volume.

Is there a reason for doing so? From a practical perspective, I am connecting the hdmi out from bdp to tv and analog out from bdp to avr. So I have an option to mute the TV but the mute display doesnt go in my samsung. If I reduce the volume in the TV, then I need to reset it when I listen to dth. The oppo has a setting called hdmi audio off, is there a problem using that?

BTW, can I use digital coax for my audio outs ( I have them spare) as they are better shielded, will it cause any issue?

This is because a player can be connected to multiple external entities and all those entities should get the signal simultaneously. Of course you can set the audio off in HDMI, if it is feasible in the player.

You can use any connection, either analogue or digital, that suits you. The decision to use a connection depends upon the following:

1. Which unit has better sound and video processing.
2. Whether you want HD Audio. If yes, then for digital transmission you have to use HDMI. Coaxial and optical digital cannot carry HD Audio.

I was talking of using the analog out (as my avr cannot process hd audio in any case) and using digital cables (as they both fit :))

Theoretically, the player should have been able to downmix the hd audio to avr via analog and while playing it, it should have given me atleast stereo quality, but the volume appears really faint. I need to go from -30db (for cds) to -5db to hear at the same volume. So I must be doing something wrong, just dont know what.

I use a two channel analogue connection from by 983 on a regular basis. And I have no issues. Please check your connections again, read the manual and see if you have made the proper connections. Also see of you can set the AVR to something like a Pure Direct mode to get better sound. When you send an analogue signal, you should not allow the AVR to do any processing.

You CANNOT use the digital RCA connectors for multi-channel analogue as they have a different impedence and operate at different frequencies. Use specific analgoue audio (red/white) RCA cables for multi-channel output.

I ran the Audio calibration disk from AIX and found the issue happening at two levels.

1. Although I have set the downmix for stereo, the frequencies below 80hz ( in the subwoofer test) dont come out at all.
2. When I run non-stereo (DD 5.1/dts5.1/lpcm) the volume for all test tones is lower in volume as compared to the stereo.

I can buy a new set of stereo cables, not sure if it will solve the problem.
