I hope most of us will agree that love for the music itself should comes first rather than the audio gears, So watching the thread "Songs with great soundstage", suddenly an idea came to my mind to start a thread which will be dedicated to the songs or tunes which are almost independent of the quality of source component, sound stage and other audiophile filters, that mean the tune or voice or the composition itself is so magical that you will forget anything else, I mean you will just forget to judge the sound. The performance will compel you to just enjoy the music. I found many old Hindi and Bengali as well as some old English composition within this category. So here is a list (1st installment) for which in my opinion you need not to be an audiophile. I know great source material and component will give you greater pleasure like bonus, but they are almost independent of the quality of source components like mentioned earlier. I am inviting other FM to come forward and contribute to this list. Most tracks of the list are between 5ts and 7ts and in mono. There may be some mistakes, but you are most welcome to make any correction. I hope it will be handy especially for younger generation-

Re: Music which are independent of components, soundstage and other audiophile demand

These are indeed golden songs. However in my opinion the songs in the 50s did not have that edge over recording quality that we get for songs of 70s onwards (Pink Floyd era). So if you do not get any additional benefit of using a high resolution audio system due to either the recording quality limitation or the lack of details (imparted into the track) which we otherwise are anxious to hear in modern tracks (eg:- sound of birds in the background in Bassotronics, Bass I love you).

To me many songs of 50s sound alike even on Medium Wave Vivid bharathi as on sound systems.

Re: Music which are independent of components, soundstage and other audiophile demand

I get your point, but these compositions or tune are so touching and my mind get so involved in a way that I just forget how they are sounding, through which medium I am listening! Yes, I have a dream too to enjoy all those tracks using decent TT & Tube amp. I do not think it will be possible in near future. So sad! Sourcing those individual tracks in decent condition will be most hard part.

However I am going to share the 2nd list as soon as possible.

Re: Music which are independent of components, soundstage and other audiophile demand

Dear friend,

I do agree that the songs listed by you are very good compositions, There is difference in the quality depending on the music system on which these songs are played. I request you to listen the old film songs (mono) in RCA sound system employed in the theatres earlier. The song sounds full very with well balanced bass levels. The same song if played on a latest music system , it may not produce the same sound effect.

Let me cite one more example - that is . if an old ( originally recorded in mono) song is sung by the original artist and recorded using latest electronic gadgets, it sounds better and much more beautiful than the original.

I agree with you. But my object is here, making list of songs to enjoy music not to judge their sound.

Re: Music which are independent of components, soundstage and other audiophile demand

these songs are not independent of system etc... try a vinyl of the old hindi songs with a decent system, and compare with the 128kbps mp3 which is pretty much the standard fare on the net for old hindi stuff...

Re: Music which are independent of components, soundstage and other audiophile demand

These songs became my favorite just listening them from Radio in childhood. It was the tune most important factor to choose them making the list. Most of the time I just forget the format when listen them. So they are selected based on my personal opinion and feelings or emotions, do not expect to be agreed by everyone.

Try youtube if you do not have any other source and check for yourself if I am wrong. You will be in immediate love with any track of those golden collections.

Start with these 3 songs, my personal favorite from film "GAMAN" which I believe little uncommon and most of the young generation (under 30 years) might never heard them.

Ajeeb Sa Neha - Hariharan - Gaman -1979

Seene Mein Jalan - Suresh Wadkar - Gaman -1979

Aap Ki Yaad Aati Rahi - Chhaya Ganguli - Gaman -1979 (This last one I forgot to enlist)

So when I hear songs like "Ajeeb Sa Neha", "Seene Mein Jalan", believe me I lost my consciousness on other factors except the composition.

Sorry, another three tracks I just missed from "Sargam" of 1979 - # Parbat ke us paar, # Dafli wale dafli baja, # Koyel boli duniya doli.

Making a 4th list would be better.

Re: Music which are independent of components, soundstage and other audiophile demand

I agree, it is already told on my first post. If you choose great source and components that will be a bonus. As those tracks were mastered during analog age, so it is natural they will sound best on LPs.

Re: Music which are independent of components, soundstage and other audiophile demand

Hi

This concept is really unique, I must say.

Now that you've brought this idea up, I agree that the songs you mentioned and many more are having the same effect upon you whether you play them over a cheap 2-in-1 or an elaborate setup.

Cheers

PS : Any song of Geeta Dutt would gain auto entry in such list. :)

+1 to what you have said. Just request you to add one song from Gumrah- Aap aye to khayale dile nashad aya, kitne bhule huge zakhmo ka pata yad aya.

Coming to very old songs (mono) kindly listen to K L Saigal sahib - Main kya janoo kya jadoo hai, you would simply love the song. Though it is on LP, this one sounds much better on a reasonably good 78 RPM system... my 2 cents!

Re: Music which are independent of components, soundstage and other audiophile demand

"Aap aye to khayale dile nashad aya" - very sweet song! Once again I request all respected members to share their favorite tracks which they think can be enjoyed with very basic system.

For last few of days I was enjoying these two great songs from two different generation.

1. 'Bole To Baansuri Kahin' by Yesudas from "Sawan Ko Aane Do" of 1979

2. 'Jalte Hein Jiske Liye' by Talat Mahmood from "Sujata" of 1959

From my very childhood I have been enjoying this two great songs, their tempo are completely different to each other, so it will be better (for full appreciation) if you listen them in two different session.

My feelings about 1st song- I always wish this 4 minutes will never end. Mind get set to a complete different plain or mode that it always become very difficult and take long time to get over it. At 2.19 when he (singer) utters the word 'bundo' then I can feel a real drop on my forehead. Great singing and music arrangement. Namaskar to Yesudasji from deepest corner of my mind.

Side note- If you have it on LP then that will be a real treatment to yourself. The CD version is quite close to crap, my sincere ingratitude (feeling very angry) to HMV saregama for taking such careless manner to this master piece while converting it on CD.

Now about 2nd song- What I can say? A very gentle, silky smooth voice which is quite unparallelled to compare, most of the time the track ends with some tears (see the video also). I wish I could meet the gentle soul or voice owner to know how gentle he was in personal life. Also I have to admit this song always reminds me how badly I am missing a tube amp these days.

Apology for little deviation from thread header, as these two songs require little care of source to appreciate them to their full potential (Applicable to others also).

Thanks for sharing same passionate love to music as I do.

Re: Music which are independent of components, soundstage and other audiophile demand

Hello,

Wonderful selection of songs and as stated by the initiator of the thread, the songs just mesmerised you - you weren't bothered about dumb-dumb stuff like audio sound, output, Hz levels, blah-blah.... Sai mentions being drawn to a song by its tune ; for me, it was the voice of the artiste, music and lyrics - in that order. Whether it was listening to a variety of music on the hand-wound gramophone, spool tapes, electric gramophone, cassettes, and now CDs/MP3s - its the song that wins !! Though most of the RPG MP3s have LOUSY quality, I do buy them just for those few odd songs that have been released on MP3 - example : dhitang dhitang bole, Lata sings for Salil MP3 ; dil beqarar sa hai, Lata, Kalyanji Anandji MP3 ; saaze dil ched de, Lata and Rafi, Kalyanji Anandji MP3, etc.

Some of my favourite gems in the duets section -
Lata and Rafi - Taaron ki zaban par hai - Nausherwan-e-Adil
Lata - Tum kya jaanon tumhare pyar mein - Shin Shinaki Bubla Boo
Lata and Talat - Itna na mujhse tu pyar bada - Chaya
Lata and Geeta - Tha Thayya karte aana - Panchayat
Lata and Rafi - Sun Mere Saajna Re / Mahi o dupatta mera - Aansoo
Hemant and Geeta - Gumsum sa yeh jahan - Duniya Jhukti Hai
Lata and Shamshad - Bachpan ke din bhula na dena - Deedar
Lata and Amirbai - Gore gore o baanke chore - Samadhi
Lata and G.M. Durrani - Lara Lappa Lara Lappa - Ek Thi Ladki
Rafi and Suman - Parbaton ke pedon par - Shagoon
Asha and Shamshad - Reshmi shalwar - Naya Daur
Lata and Mahendra - Phool ban jaaongi - Pyar Kiye Jaa
Lata and Hemant - Chupa lo yun dil mein - Mamta
Lata and Mukesh - Humsafar mere humsafar - Poornima
Lata and Kishore - Khubsoorat diwana - Mr. X in Bombay
Lata and Manna Dey - Aaja Sanam / Yeh Raat bheegi - Chori Chori
Lata and Subir Sen - Gagan Ke chanda - Apne Huve Paraye
Lata and Dwijen Mukherjee - Ae dil kahan teri manzil - Maya
Lata and Asha - Sakhi Ri sun bole - Miss Mary
Rafi and Suman - Tehriye hosh mein aa loon - Mohabbat Isko Kahte Hain

and two solo gems, which to my knowledge, has never been released ( by
you know who ) on any format except maybe 78 RPM :

Lata - Dil ki duniya mein aake na jaana,
Tujhe meri kasam na rulaana,
Ya rabba pheri pheri, Ya rabba pheri pheri, Ya rabba pheri aaa...
from the film Chingari

Lata - Tirunilla Tirunilla Tirunilla la,
Gaaye lata, gaaye lata, gaaye lata aa,
pa ma sa ri...
No idea of the film. Its probably the only Hindi film song
where the singer anounces that he/she is singing......

Hello,

Though most of the RPG MP3s have LOUSY quality, I do buy them just for those few odd songs that have been released on MP3 -.

..
in our zeal for hi fidelity etc etc etc, we somewhere forget the essesnce of music. listening to a great composition will always carry its own charm. think unplugged and informal hummings of a real good singer that we are blessed to have access to on youtube etc.
if you d look at the evolution of music in movies, it was always singer centric in the early period. so much so that even until late 50s, lots of songs would barely have much of accompaniment. this was the era of evolution of lyricists as well as music directors when they found their own niche and this was the point where hindi film music developed an identity of its own. it was mostly classical bandish derived stuff until late 40s.
then as more and more of raags and their variations got recorded, music directors started using different instruments as well as music arrangements so that they could come up with something new. remember the tune of nagin on spanish violin( imitating been)? that tune became the crux of whole song.
later on in 90s, most new songs were only a patch on previously used tunes but with different orchestration.
a great song would have great raag composition as well as great lyrics. being sung well, arranged well, recorded well and finally reproduced well on a great system is 10% of the charm barely. you would only notice em unless it was very very badly recorded or sung by a besura vocalist.
i wholeheartedly agree that great recording is not the only essence to music. it can only be cherry on the cake. i however prefer my plum cake sans icing. :)
I get your point, but these compositions or tune are so touching and my mind get so involved in a way that I just forget how they are sounding, through which medium I am listening! Yes, I have a dream too to enjoy all those tracks using decent TT & Tube amp. I do not think it will be possible in near future. So sad! Sourcing those individual tracks in decent condition will be most hard part.

radio announcer kabban mirza sang just 2 songs for movies. both in razia sultan. most people have heard aayi zanjeer ki jhankaar.
i d rather list his tera hizr mera naseeb hai as real great gem.
further off the top of my head-
dheere se aaja ri akhiyan me nindiya -albela

This is a thread which deserves a 2nd Life ! what a collection above...

I’d not be surprised if the list goes into tens of thousands.... half the songs from 50s and 60s would qualify. Add those from other languages and you realise the exercise starts being futile due its inherent non-specificity.
