hey guys,

my mom is helping me start off my sudio system with a pair of speakers. she has agreed to let me have them when i move out of the house(in about 2 years), so i want to choose wisely.

they are going to be used with a 10 year old onkyo avr for now, which needs some repairs, which i will get done by next week.
I'm saving up money for a preowned audio analogue puccini, which ill try to get cos i reallly really like its sound.

ive heard the following speakers till now:

--monitor audio rx6(didnt like too much because of the harsh treble, though the clarity was to die for. also, it sounded much better with the audio analogue)

--monitor audio bx series floorstganders (dont remember the exact model, but they were very sweet sounding, and were more listenable than the bx6's, though they lacked their clarity)

--quad 11l2(i liked these too. more "comforting" than the MA's, though these lacked sound separation and clarity)

--a few wharfedale speakers(i found all of them rather underwhelming, i dont know why but i didnt like them)
i heard these through a marantz pearl series and an audio analogue puccini at bass n treble, dwarka. i didnt like the marantz as i found it too bright.

my audition list:
this is where i need your suggestions. i have put together a very basic list, and need your help to include more. if possible, please tell me where i can audition them in delhi too(i dont mind visiting peoples houses too, as long as they're fine with it)

-quad 22L2(im hoping these provide better separation, though im worried i may find the bass a little over powering, as i found it nearly adequate on the 11l2's)

-bowers and wilkins speakers(i cant find a shop in delhi which has these, so if anyone knows where i can listen to them, please tell me. I know they are priced at a premium in india, but i could probably source standmounters from abroad)

-bookshelf speakers by mordaunt short(please advise me on the models i should consider)

other considerations:

-my mom realizes that these are a long term investment, so shes kept an open budget on the condition that i defer the purchase of the electronic components. however, open means a max of 70-80k

-the speakers will be mainly used for music. I mostly listen to classic rock. my favorite artist these days is billy joel though, and my fav album jesus christ superstar.

-the speakers shouldnt be too fussy about placement and room size( i know this is a big requirement, but as im still a kid and plan to use these speakers in my moms living room, my college dorm room and eventuallly my own houses bedroom, its an essential one too)

-i dont like to much bass, and absolutely hate prolonged bass, so bass neednt be a consideration, as long as its precise(hence i dont necessarily need the biggest floorstanders)

-i like my highs to be refined and laid back( i dont know how to describe it better, sorry)

thank you
dhruv

wow, this was a mother of a post, thanks for reading through it =))

i dont think they are. ive been to the onkyo dealership in delhi, they dont have B&W, they only have onkyo and klipsch speakers.
ill call them and check tomorrow though

Hi kernelpanicpopcorn,
As per your requirements I would suggest you to go with a pair of bookshelves speakers with proper stands which would yield you your desired sound with sufficient and controlled bass. I would also strongly recommend an integrated stereo amp rather than your onkyo or any other receiver.
My suggestions would be;
Marantz PM6003 + MA BR2 or BX2 (as you ve auditioned it)
Nad325BEE + PSB image B5 or Q acoustics 2020
CA 650A + MS aviano2 or Mezzo2
I have not heard any Quad so cant comment on it, but reviews say its a very good speaker if paired with proper partnering equipments.

Please take your time and audition as much possible, believe your own ears rather than any kind of reviews or suggestions. But IMHO NAD with PSB combo gives you typical laidback presentation you needed, Happy auditioning:):)

hmmm, i would love to buy a new amolifier, but my mom wouldnt agree to it. my moms ok to spend money on the speakers, but she is pretty clear that she wont get a new amp just as yet. thats why im saving up for a new amp myself.

i think buying a really nice pair of speakers makes sense coz the speakers will last way longer than the electronics anyway...

Check out MS Aviano 6, the klipsch f-20 or f-30, go to reliance digital they have an offer for jamo 606. You can listen to elac at onkyo dealerships.

@Dhruv,

First thing you would understand that AVR may be good for movies but no match with integrated or pre-power amp for audio. So, today or tomorrow you may have to purchase an amp. You are aware of it and started saving your money. That's great. You may start with a pre-owned one.

Regarding speakers, I think a pair of bookshelf with proper stand will make sense to you. As you are going to join college in two years time and like to take the set-up there in your hostel room. Bookshelf will be right choice.

The budget of 70-80k for a pair of bookshelf and stand is a good budget to start with. The options which come to my mind -
Around <30k : Monitor Audio BX2, Quad 11L2, Dali Lektor2, MS Aviano, PSB Image B5/B6, Qacoustics 2020
You can listen Wharfdale and Tannoy also. Lektor2 is very easy on placement point of view and musical, as you are likely to place them in your hostel room they will be very convenient. Quad speaker is good but they require proper placement and good stand. MA BX2 is good speaker with bites and punch. I think you may be satisfied with MA BX2 for Rock music. MS Aviano is also good speaker, I liked them more than their Mezzo series. PSB Image B6 is a good speaker and gels well with Marantz or NAD amp, Qaccoustics 2020 is smallish bookshelves and costs around 16k
Around 45k : Epos m12i, very musical and soothing speaker. I think they are better than many others in its price point. You may consider it. They are easy to drive and plays well with even low powered tube amp.
I am restricting my suggestions between the brands, which you would be able to get demo at Delhi/NCR.
Yah, one more option is Canton speaker. Although, I am not familiar with the models of Canton, but they are good acclaimed brand.
In 75-80k range you may consider PSB synchrony
If you are interested to know the dealer's name and address, may PM me.

One important thing, what's your source? A CD player or PC?. If you are interested for a CDP, a group buy option is available for Marantz CDP. They are really good and economical, you can straight go for it.

Also, allocate money for good interconnect and speaker wire.

for the time being, i will be using the old onkyo and an off the shelf dvd player. i know its not (even close) to perfect, but thats the way things are. i will probably get a new amp within a year and a cdp a while after that.

i will probably buy interconnects and speaker cable with the speakers.

could you please PM me the dealer names and addresses for the speakers you suggested?

and my list was only a rough, preliminary one, so dont limit yourself to those brands.

again, thanks for your help

what you just posted doesnt sound right. the ma rx6 has very sweet highs and definitely not harsh. im not saying that they werent harsh when you heard them, but in all probability due to some other part of the system. either the amp didnt suit it or they were playing mp3 music. and the marx6 is definitely better than its smaller brother the bronze. so take a listen again, specifically with an amp to match it - the nad, marantz, cambridge will all do nicely. and also listen to it from a good source and use a proper cd to play. imo the ma rx6 is one of the best (if not the best) speaker in its price range.

whats your budget on the amp

Around 45k : Epos m12i, very musical and soothing speaker. I think they are better than many others in its price point.

+1. I heard them with Music Hall amp. Wonderful sounding speakers. IIRC, there was one Mr. Bharatan from Bangalore who was looking to sell his speakers. I did speak to him when I was searching for bookshelf speakers but at that time he was out of country. Do audition these speakers & if you are interested, I can do some research and get his No. for you.

@afj
i heard the rx6's forst with a marantz pearl series amplifier, with which i found the trwble too harsh(for me, our tastes may differ :))
i later heard them with an audio analogue puccini, and they sounded infinitely warmer, which i liked, but i still didnt find them to be awesome, and didnt feel the urge to just buy them and get them home.

i mainly used two songs to audition them, both on cds:
i dont know how to love him, from jesus christ superstar.

and my fav,
piano man by billy joel.

@capt rajesh
i wouldnt mind saving some money and getting my speakers used, but ill definitely need to audition them first. do you know where i can do so in delhi?

im visiting bangalore next week, so i can drop by his house too.

PS hows your tv search going on?

Usher tiny dancer BE 718 is a hot fav here for that budget

but you are gonna get more cribbing from audiophiles on not having a dedicated 2 channel amp :)

Purchase the Audiolab 6000A Integrated Amplifier at a special offer price.
