My new purchase - Onkyo SR608 - Need you inputs for my setup

Hi All,

I am new to this website and I am not an audioholic and just started learning things in home theatre setup.

This is my first home theatre setup and I need your inputs/suggestions to buy best speakers for my amp Onkyo SR608.

After a lot of reviews and search, I decided to go for Onkyo SR608. I bought this amp in London for 439 and I will take this to India in another 5 months (not using this amp at the moment as i cant buy speakers from UK and carry them to India) after completing my project here.

I have heard about Wharfedale/Mardaunt Short/Q acoustics/Mission. Please suggest me some good speaker setup (Front, rear, centre and sub) and from which dealer I should go for. At max i can afford 40-50K and not beyond that. I will be using it mainly for movies and perhaps 20% music..

Appreciate you help in providing inputs to set up my home theatre. I am from chennai and work in bangalore. So dealers in both these cities will be fine for me.
 
Ramesh, Congrats on your onkyo 608. Get a pair of QA 1010i speaker for cheap from UK. Matching QA speakers you can buy here in India to complete the QA 1000 cinema package. The 1010i are quite compact so that you carry them along.

Yes as Spiro said Tannoy F1 is a good choice, in Uk you can get a pair for half the price they are selling for in India.
 
guys please excuse my ignorance as this is my first amp..please lemme know what all cables i may need (apart from HDMI) to pair my amp sr608? I am planning to buy all the necessary cables in Uk rather than buying in India..
 
ramesh, depends on what all you need to connect. But if you have an hdmi dvd player as source. Then you need one hdmi cable from dvd player to AVR and another from AVR to TV. The Hdmi cable from AVR to TV remains common even if you add other sources. For ex. if you add a WDTV or other media player, just add one more hdmi cable. Think about the length you will need and buy accordingly.

Hi Ramesh,

Congrats on the 608 and welcome to the league :)

Since you mentioned that you intend to use the system more for movies than music, you should look at a full fledged surround setup.

Consider the following before you start making a 'shortlist":

1. Budget for speakers
2. Approach - step by step or one-shot

Once you have decided on the above, you will have an idea of the cables needed.

Here are the typical ones:

Speakers --> AMP (OFC speaker cable; QED, DAC)
Source (CDP, DVDP, BDP) --> AMP (HDMI & Digital Coaxial)
Source (Sat TV) --> AMP (RCA 0r HDMI)

UK is the birthplace for most audiophile cables and you should definitely give it a shot while you are there.

If you are not very particular about how you speakers look, try the Wharfedale moviestar 70+ for movies - retails at 28k back here in India.

Alternately, the Q Acoustics Cinema package also augurs well for your use.

You will 2 - 3 HDMI and an optical cable. Other than that, you will need 14 gauge speaker cable (it is sold be length and you will need at least 10 meter for 5.1 setup).

For subwoofer, you will need an RCA cable.

Buy banana plug connectors (9 pair)

Better to buy cables in India from some electronics parts store.

Ramesh,

I generally listen to Jazz, pop, soft rock, reto bollywood and some classical as well.

My experience with the 9.2 has been simply awesome. The higs and mids sound great and the bass is unparalleled. Despite a heavy bass, the 9.2 delivers tight controlled bass and seldom sounds boomy.

Await more pics and a slightly more detailed review.

IMHO, the laidback nature of the 9.2s makes the listening experience superbly fatigue free.

Can any post some reviews abt DefTech Procinema 1000+ or can you direct me to right thread where I can get the reviews abt DefTech Procinema 1000+ ? What is the total cost of this package?

I saw in speaker price thread mentioning 85K but the last update to that was pretty old. Do anyone know whats the price of this package now and where can i find this in Chennai or Bangalore?
