Hi

Iam new to this forum .i am really passionate about hi end audio.i have never designed a hi end speaker, buy have some basic knowledge about speakers. i am very keen on building a large floor stander speaker like the vintage JBL speakers.Any kind of help and advice would be really helpful.(Woofer size minimum 12 inches).I will have too start from scratch ,like a speaker design book ect.

i presently own a marantz amp and JBL floor standers .

Thanking you

It's a big ocean...speaker building...may be you search for already build threads in the DIY Section. And implement the same.

DIY is too costly ..!! :D

Replicate already proved models or designs ..that should be the safest bet.

I would suggest start with a Book Shelf stereo or MTM model first.

Crossovers best option - Buy Mini DSP's easy to play around(Which even I have to do to complete my Econowave project)

Amplifiers - Class D amplifiers from parts express or Eight audio class D amplifiers.

Thanks,
Yashwanth

Hi VVTS,

Going by your description you may be interested in large Open Baffle speakers. Go for a 15 inch woofer, a mid range and a super tweeter. Not sure what your budget is, but you would find some large drivers for various budgets.

Enjoy the journey, it is as much a pleasure as the final outcome; which is never final :)

regards,

Hi VVTS,

Here in this forum, quite a few names I can recall as far as DIY speakers are concerned.

Look for Manniraj's builds here. He has a couple of threads on a couple of his builds, if I recall correctly.

Then, depending on your fluency with physics, either you may be able to spot Hari Iyer's doosras right out of his hand or get easily foxed by them. So much technical details, grahs & jargons he uses!

Then, Bipin/Bijin's builds are simply a class apart.

Then, there is one member whose name I couldn't recall now (unfortunately). He has his own blog and he is good in photography too. (Other members might help me here to spot him. Thanks). In his blog, he has got three or four (again, I can't remeber how many) builds explained lucidly. Once you read him, you might want to jump in right away. Very nice write-ups!

And, recently there has been a HT diy thread by one captrajesh; with lots of pictures, the tools used details et al. Though not a diy by himself as he had employed professional speaker builders, that thread should also a good resource for you.

As far as the crossover is concerned, you need to take the paid help route (if you don't have the required skill set & the right tools).

Have fun in your diy journey!

+1 to everyone. DIY speakers are more critical than electronics IMHO.

Passive crossover design needs lots of expertise.

First select a established design. Then select drivers according to your budget. Get a active xo (or build passive xo that is prescribed by the speaker designer). Catch hold of a good carpenter.

One important thing - you might need few amps (like 4) for a 2 way active build.

Hi VVTS,

This forum is full of people who have started their DIY journeys standing at the same crossroads you are on. I remember my own starting point:
  1. Passionate about high end audio: check
  2. Know a bit about audio systems: check
  3. Never designed or built anything: check
  4. Want big floor-standers, specially those 3-way or more-way designs with 12" man-sized woofers: check
  5. Willing to start from scratch and promise to be patient: check

I did all this, taught myself to design speakers, designed a few, those designs became very dear possessions of the friends who own them, and I learned enough about speakers to lose my infatuation for large 3-way floorstanders with 12" woofers. My largest speakers have 10" woofers, and I am never going to do 3-way or more unless I do active. (I'm not even sure you will understand some of these terms.) And most important, I learned what constitutes good performance of audio systems. I doubt I'd have learned my most valuable lessons in that area had I not done DIY. In my humble opinion, those insights are more valuable to me than the knowledge gained in design and building.

So, there are many of us who've been where you are. If we could do it, so can you, up to a point. And we all love giving advice and suggestions. (You've already been suggested that you may want to look at 3-way open-baffle systems with 15" woofers and super tweeters. See?) So: what next?

Believe me, online company like us will make your journey only a slight bit less lonely, but lonely it will be. You'll have to do the walking. What next?

Nowadays, when DIY newbies talk about their dreams and ask for advice, my first question is:
  • are you trying this because you think DIY systems are cheaper? OR
  • are you in this because you think DIY systems give better performance?
You'll be surprised how many would-be DIYers back away when they realise DIY is not cheap. :ohyeah:

My second question: have you ever built anything with your own hands which required more than, say, 2 days of work and needed tools and paper and calculations and designing and figuring out things? Are you a survivor of this lonely journey? Only a few music lovers are.

You'll be surprised what emerges from these questions. :ohyeah: Makes you introspect.

What next?

Yes. Thanks! Actually, I've been off the forum for the past 24 hours or so. This morning when I was watching some other DIY woodworking video, suddenly his name popped up into my mind. Then, when I've logged in here you've all come out with the responses. Great! :)

Thanks for introducing Sumanta to me. Cheers!

Hey, thanks, guys. Nice to hear from all of you. :) Nice to know some of you remember me. :)

VVTS, maybe you can tell us a bit more about your thoughts about DIY? Why are you thinking of getting into it? The more we know about your thoughts, the better we will be able to give you inputs.

Hi tcpip aka Tarun,
It's all the impact.... impact.... impact... positive impact you/your blog had made on the readers which has made them not to forget you. The finer details, sketches of speaker cabinets, blog about your photography interest et all remain etched in mind. The technology may help us in bookmarking our interests and over the period of time, these bookmarks themselves seem to extend beyond 10, 20 GBs :D. And with the age catching up, one doesn't even remember which bookmark refers to whok/what. But still those positive impacts mapped in our brains don't fail us. Though recalling the name may be a bit difficult, getting connected by the forum members with some clues is often wonderful.
Hope you're still continuing with your DIY stuff & photography! Your kid(s) must have all been grown up now! Cheers!:)

*Addendum
P.S: Still I haven't gone through your blog again. I've just clicked that link provided by Sarathssca. Just by looking at those speakers only, I think I can recall quite a few of your pointers.
1. First & foremost, I think you've made a plexi glass top for one of your speaker builds.
2. First build was of ply and your bracing the cabinet was a bit "too much". :)
3. To circumvent the flush mounting the speakers, you had used a 4mm ply.
4. You've named your three or four builds in marathi (or some other language?), I guess.
5. Photography.... photos of your new born baby and mom, son(?). Still in my memory
6. Then.. a few recipes too, I guess.
7. Finer details of how you went about measuring the speakers (though I didn't understand a bit) :)
