Hello everyone,

I’m looking to purchase a good pair of stereo bookshelf speakers in Chennai. My preference is for brands like Wharfedale and other reputed stereo brands. However, I’m facing a few issues and would appreciate some guidance from the experienced members here.

  1. Limited availability:
Most of the showrooms I find online/offline claim to deal in multiple brands, but when I visit or call, they often don’t have the specific brand (like Wharfedale) and try to convince me to buy whatever they have in stock.
  2. No proper auditioning:
I couldn’t find any place in Chennai where I can audition stereo speakers before buying. Most local stores mainly push home theatre packages, whereas my interest is purely 2-channel stereo listening.
  3. Authorized dealers vs. others:
Is it necessary to buy only from an authorized dealer to get proper warranty support? Some local stores in Chennai offer much lower prices but say they cannot provide a GST bill. They claim that within the first year everything will work fine, and after that, if there’s any issue, I can contact them and they’ll “redirect” it to the service center. This sounds risky, but I’m not sure how warranty works in such cases.

In short, I’m confused about what’s the right channel to purchase quality stereo audio gear in Chennai — especially for those of us who are passionate about pure stereo and not interested in home theatres.

Do you have the stereo amp already? If so, try to walk in with your stereo amp and hook it with the speakers available in demo.
There is nothing like "Stereo speakers" seperately, so above option should help you.

What are other online shopping mart like hifimart dealing geniune bookshelf speakers of various brands.
For online options look no further than hifimart.
Regarding other websites there have been grievances mentioned here. Talk to Mr. Anil, he will give sound advice regarding matching components.

Choice of offline store or online channels would depend on how much you are willing to trade off or not on budget, reliability and audition experience. Unfortunately, we barely have offline retailers with auditioning setup for popular mid range consumer speaker brands, likely because they have to compete with Online retailers that sell the same brands at a much competetive price and it won't make business sense to them if they let walk-in customers auditon them in their rented space and then purchase it with a online retailer for a better deal.

However there are a few choices in Chennai for anyone looking to audition professional studio and audiophile grade speaker brands. Cinema Focus in RK Salai is one such great and reliable place and they deal with high end speaker and audio systems. They had multiple dedicated audition rooms for Music (stereo) and HT setups when I last visited several years back.

ProFX Chennai is another store that I know has been in the prosumer brands business for a long time but I don't have personal experience with them. I would imagine they might have brands like KEF, JBL and Polk.

Other smaller brick and mortar retailers selling mainstream speaker brands like KEF/Polk/Taga targeted at the HT market are less likely to have dedicated audition rooms or ready stocks. If you want the best price deals and brand choice, online retailers are the best channel but the trade off is the risk of no audition and limited after sales support if you happen to need it.

Good luck with your hunting!
