Hi,

Recently, i 've gone to a friend's house to audition a pair of old bookshelf B&W DM610 which he said he wants to sell cheap(not sure yet how much). The problem here is the speaker isn't in good condition, the left tweeter became silent when we crank the volume but will play again and then kept regulate in a stop and play manner. No problem when playing at low and moderate volume though. Check the wires and they were well plugged. Amplification was a Yamaha AV rx-v 1800 receiver.

From the spec i found on the web, the speakers max power rating is 150 watt 4ohm so i expect it to play loud. I would love to buy it as the sound was not bad; warm and balance midrange with slightly boosted hi around 4khz to 6khz perhaps a character of the aluminium dome tweeter.

Back to topic, like to know is it a big problem? do i need to replace the tweeter? This model is very rare in my place...
I'm totally noob went it comes to technical problem so any help will be appreciate.

To ensure it is not amplifier's output stage problem interchange the left right speaker position and try. If the same speaker still behaves in the same way it is clear it is speaker problem. Now to be sure whether it is network problem or tweeter problem interchange the tweeters and try. By doing this now you would have localised the problem.

Now depending on the price your friend offers and the cost of the component to replace you can decide whether or not to buy the speakers.

Getting spares for B&W is easy and great, more over being malasia IMO import should not be a problem.

Today we tried to switch everything from interconnect to driver and it turned out to confirm the bad tweeter. After that, we try to open up the tweeter and learned that it is a fluid cooled tweeter. Nothing wrong with the voice coil nor magnet as both the bad one and the good one looks the same.

At first we thought maybe it had dust but after cleaning the voice coil and refix it, the same problem still exist.

Can anyone tell what is it that causing its failure? before i spent some cash i like to be sure about the problem at least.

Have you measured the ohmic value of both the tweeters? Both are supposed to be same. Simple naked eye viewing will not help in solving electronics problems. Any how PM me your mail ID I will send you the complete service manual for DM 610 also the availability and the price of spares,

Thanks
