Need help with mounting a projector - cables, mounts???

Friends,

I am renovating my home in Pune, and need some advice on the projector wiring for the living room. I am planning to ceiling mount the projector, and am not sure of the following
1. Where to buy the ceiling mount from? Should I go to a high end store like Croma or a regular computer hardware store?
2. Where to buy a 40-50 feet VGA cable from? I have not seen these type of cables that long, and definitely need this as a starting point, since only play mkv files thru my laptop, which does not have an HDMI output
3. Where to buy a 40-50 feet AV composite and HDMI cable from? I do not have an HDMI source right now, and am not planning to buy right away, since would be moving to US in the next 2-3 months...I will bring back something from there.
4. What conduit size should I be using...the electrician generally use 3/4 inch, but I guess I would be needing a much larger one, since a VGA cable will need lot of space to pull thru.
5. Any other things I should take care of while installing?

I will answe Q 1-I bought a seiling mount from the local electronics/computer market in SP Road, for 1200. The problem with this was that the mounting points were not matching my projectors, so I had to then get an adapter plate made from 2mm thick MS locally. It was not difficult. You may want to take your projector while buying the mount and ensure that this problem doesnt arise when you buy yours.

I am not sure about Pune, but in Chennai, you can get one from Jenefas.

I am sure there must be a local seller of ceiling mounts. One way is to contact a dealer of HT equipment and see where he buys from. Another way is to contact Jenefas and see if they have a local dealer. Worst case, you can place an order with them and get it couriered to you.

2. Where to buy a 40-50 feet VGA cable from? I have not seen these type of cables that long, and definitely need this as a starting point, since only play mkv files thru my laptop, which does not have an HDMI output

Such lengths are available from brands such as Bandridge, Wireworld, etc. You have to place special orders for such lengths. Again check with a local showroom of HT.

The answer is the same as your previous question. Composite is also available as raw cable and then you can crimp the two ends with the correct connector. That way you will not have any extra cable length.

4. What conduit size should I be using...the electrician generally use 3/4 inch, but I guess I would be needing a much larger one, since a VGA cable will need lot of space to pull thru.

If you are going to install HDMI, composite, and VGA, you should use a 2 inch conduit.

From the AVR to the projector, also install three CAT5 cables. This is for two reasons - one is a precaution. If the HDMI gets spoilt, you can use Baluns and transmit HDMI data through the Cat5 cables. Two you can also install an IR emitter near your AVR and not have to point the RC towards the projector. The IR emitter will transmit the signal through the CAT5 to the projector.

Cheers

Hi,

I have been in the same boat approx an year ago and here are my findings:

1. I bought a ceiling mount from the same source I got my projector - of course, my set is a home grown brand not a multinational.

2. For a VGA cable - you may not get a reputed brand for the length, but a good cable specialist (vendor) should be able to supply a factory fabricated piece.

3. Same as above - I realised and eliminated the AV composite as HDMI handles all traffic since I have use an AVR that consolidates all inputs. Lengthy HDMi cables come in Taiwanese brands and claim to be gold plated. Not sure how great the quality is.

4. Very Important - I chipped the ceiling, installed only the HDMi cable in a 1" conduit and pop-sealed it back again. The tough part was to keep the conduit away from the electrical cables and ensure proper plastering.
3/4 inch could be a bit too small!
