Hi All,
I am looking to buy a projector for home use. Are there any 720p projectors available in the price range of 30k-35k??

Also, I might be travelling to Thailand soon, so is it a good idea to buy from there (i.e. is the price difference huge??)

A little more info:

- Screen Size would be max 90inches.
- Distance from where projector will be mounted to the screen would be max 8ft
- Will watch movies on it only in a dark room (or very less light....like 2 units of 6-watt led lights)
- Need to have HDMI input
- 3D is not required at all

acer k330.

my vote optoma hd 66...

all in ur menbtioned price bracket..if getting from bangkok

Will it be able to project on a 90inch screen from a distance of 8ft???

Apologize if the question sounded dumb. This is my first ever Pj buy, so am not sure if the pjs in general can project to a decent sized screen from that distance.

Mine does 90"-100" (Panasonic AE 700) from approx 10.5 ft so I dont think that should be a problem...

ehh sorry..check specs..off course i know they can produce a 90 inch decent image regarding pq..but for throw distance..pls see speces

Just read the specs on amazon for HD66 (looks like a nice pj)....says max 73 inches from 8ft and 91 inches from 10ft. Would it make a difference if I mount them on the ceiling? Would it provide a bigger picture??

The picture size I got before & after (ceiling mount) were more or less the same. I had initially placed the projector in front of the screen & then mounted it recently, except that I had to invert the screen. Projector settings do allow for some horizontal & vertical scaling too so I don't think you need to worry much.

I have a thread where some pics are posted if you want to take a look.

Are there any screens that open horizontally? i.e. from left to right instead of pull down or pull up design??

that can be done with local mistry help...shutter type...like glass panels are there in some windows..horizontal operation..
screeen has to be on fixed frame then..

I don't think its really practical. When pulled downwards the slight weight at the bottom of the screen as well as gravity ensures that your screen remains flat.
This unless you plan to use a real firm material. You could also have a permanent fixed screen.

The other option is to not use any screen & instead project directly on the wall (preferably plain, smooth & white. I have a couple of friends here in Mumbai who are using it & very satisfied too.
This does away with your fear of getting the right sized projection & If unhappy you can always add the screen later.

You could google to see pics of all of the above.

Yeah, I was just wondering if such screens are available, as need to work out how to setup the whole thing in the neatest manner, since this area is a part of the living room.

The wall where the picture would be projected is not white, so I have no other option but to buy a screen. I can not keep a fixed screen as well as the TV also resides on the same wall. Also the front speakers would be placed on the sides of the TV (center would be above it), so the screen would need to be placed in such a manner that it opens up in front of the TV and speakers (I hope the screen does not effect the sound from the speakers, as the speakers would be hiding behind it). Here are some pics of the area where I am looking to setup the hometheater (I apologize for the shoddy drawing on it :p):

A lot of bad customer reviews for HD66 are floating around the internet. All complaining about the chip going bad within a couple of years resulting in white dots and black lines showing on the screen (basically dead pixels). Here is one site where a lot of such customer reviews are available (see the comments section):

You can have a pull down screen set up on slightly long hooks, above your tv where you have drawn the 7.5 ft line, in a matter that when pulled down it comes in front of the tv without any obstruction to each other(shouldn't be too difficult).

I use a Dalite screen but you can also check this link to see if he can customize something for you:
Rolling Shutters, Cinema Screens, Video Projection Screens

As far as the projector goes as with all electronics its always a hit & miss. When I bought my panasonic the reviews were fantastic all over but the 1st lamp hardly lasted 700 hrs or so (supposed to be 3000 hrs).

If the ceiling is POP then you can't install the PJ on it. Get a wall mount instead. Works same as ceiling mont except it'll be attached to the wall instead of ceiling. Also, I don't know about the lens shift of hd66 but unless it needs to be inverted for ceiling/wall mount (some PJs can only throw the picture up, and not blow the lens), go for a shelf instead and place it normally (instead of flipped) on the shelf. Much easier to configure when the PJ is sitting on something compared to when its hanging upside down.

And for the screen, you can get the brackets which will add some distance between the wall and screen. If you're intending to place the screen ahead of speakers, then you'll need an acoustic screen. Normal screens will mess up the audio too much.

Do these projectors need any minimum distance from the wall or can they be placed right next to the wall itself?? I like the idea of getting a shelf instead of wall/ceiling mount.

Also, can the screen be mounted/attached to the pop? or does it require a wall??

Any idea where I can find acoustic screens and how much they would cost?

You need to leave atleast 3inches from the wall. That too if you are putting it on top of the shelf (open from all sides except the shelf below) instead of inside a closed shelf. If putting it inside a shelf, it'll need more space on all sides for proper airflow to make sure it doesn't get too hot.

No minimum distance from the wall reqd as long as you are able to change wiring etc as reqd but you are in a catch 22 situation as the projector will have to be in line with the screen as its on a flat surface & this might make it difficult for people to sit there (hurt the head while standing etc).
Optionally break the ceiling a bit & install the mount on the main ceiling (like a fan) & then have that portion of ceiling built around the mount.
This looks much better too from personal experience.

Also, dont know about the optoma, but all projector settings are done via remote so once installed you do not have to reach out to the projector at all.
