Newbie: help-set up for hard rock/alternate rock/metal listening

- should i wait for a try with DAC?? or
- should i start a round of audition again and have warfe 10.5 exchanged ??(coz i dont think that the issue of excitement and rythm can be resolved by using a DAC)..or
- simply what should i do??

Firstly, congrats!

1. Yes, definitely try a DAC. It will surpass the SQ of the onboard chips on both the BDP and the laptop by a big margin and will provide a huge boost to the overall SQ. Options are the rDac, DacMagic, V-DAC, Beresford etc.

2. The lack of excitement can also be caused by your amplifier. If the amp has a easy-going sound, you will miss some of the enthusiasm from your music. Try to audition a different amp.

3. Be patient. Don't take hasty decisions. This is a tough hobby and you will reap rich rewards for being patient and diligent with your testing.

Once you have exhausted all avenues, you can think about replacing the speakers.

thanks a lot bluu for the advice..

that brings me a respite...

will definitely try out DAC..and being patient is something that ive already learnt...

other suggestions are welcome..

this one goes for all-

I have to start a new thread, but i cant see the option to start new thread anywhere on my screen. though i have done it before. can someone help me out..

Consider a Squeezebox instead of a DAC. A squeezebox will give you a decent DAC AND will let you stream music wirelessly from your laptop or from internet radio.

Nice laptop, by the way. Love thinkpads.

@ olly- i can tell you about musical fidelity V DAC. they fall around 20.5 k including VAT in India. got this info from audio people, Chennai and they told me that the prices are uniform across India. For CA DACmagic, i think they are priced at least 50% more than V DAC. will let you know the exact price in India.

@asliarun:
squeezebox...okay...i shall definitely give it a more research..
and how i just love thinkpads..i have hooked this machine up with mini dock too..

Praveen,

While you can add a dac, I think Wharfedales are not the right kind of speakers for the music you hear.

I think you should go for American speakers like Klipsch and Paradigm. They wont attempt to make it smooth which is what will give you the raw edge in metal.

Just my two paise.

Check the Amity's . Perfect for hard rock/alternate rock/metal listening

The Amity are full range, floor standing speakers. These are 2-way speaker systems using a full-range driver, the Fostex FE166En, and a large bass driver, the Eminence BETA 12A-2. Sound reproduction is clear and open.

The full-range driver handles a large proportion of the frequency spectrum, from the lower midrange on up. The bass driver handles the low frequencies. The crossover is a first order network, set at 300 Hz.

The full-range driver is mounted in an open baffle. This gives improved clarity to sound, as box colourations are not present. Free radiation of sound from front and back also gives an open perspective to sound in a room. The bass driver is mounted in a conventional ported cabinet.

A primary objective of this design is to maintain high sensitivity. The selection of the bass driver is from a professional range of drivers, to give high sensitivity over the full frequency range.

The cabinets are beautifully finished in real wood veneers.
