Hi.
I have a Airtel's HD STB .

Its 2 yrs old now. It has a SPDIF output . So, have a co-axial connected from Airtel to the Denon 2113 Audio Coaxial in.

Still no 5.1 channel audio. Only the front plays .

What am I missing ?

Setup is :

HDMI connected from TV to HDMi out of Denon.
And co-axial connected from Airtel SPDIF to the Denon 2113 Audio Coaxial in

I think your Denon got confused, as you have connected STB's HDMI out also to Denon and Denon's HDMI out to TV's HDMI IN. Hence it might be ignoring the Coaxial input from STB and giving audio via HDMI which is PCM (Stereo) only.

Try to keep the setup like this:

- STB's HDMI OUT to TV's HDMI IN
- STB's Coaxial/Optical OUT to Denon's Coaxial/Optical IN

Sorry, my setup is exactly how you said.

AIRTEL HDMI to TV HDMI IN.

Then TV HDMI into Denon HDMI OUT .

Then CoAxial of STB to Denon CoAxial.

See my complete setup diagram,

Try to remove this step. Don't understand why you need this.
TV HDMI into Denon HDMI OUT ???? there is no need for doing this.

I understand it is by default when you use AVR with other devices, just don't select this HDMI option in TV settings, instead use STB's HDMI option.

If you have connected Airtel HDMI to TV, then Video will go through STB to TV.
and STB's Coaxial OUT to Denon's Coaxial In should be able to get the 5.1 Dolby sound on HD channels (However Zee TV HD, Zee Cinema HD, all Sports HD channels don't have 5.1 sound)
Just keep the TV's audio settings as an external audio output.

Also, select Coaxial Audio in Denon's settings to play audio from Coaxial input coming from Airtel STB.

(Unfortunately, I can't see your setup diagram, as it's not showing to me due to some restrictions at my place.)

I see.
So you want me to remove the TV's HDMI into Denon HDMI OUT.

And where is the Denon settings to enable CoAxial input ?

The Airtel STB has no such settings for enabling 5.1 . I guess, its automatic for all HD channels.

May be, we just need to remove rhat HDMI and enable on Denon.

So, help me with the denon settings, where to find that . :(

Sorry, I haven't used Denon so far, hence not sure in particular.
However I have Onkyo which has a button called 'input selector' to choose various Audio/Video Input connected to Onkyo.
Similarly Denon would have options to select various Audio/Video inputs connected to it in its manual.
just choose 'Coaxial' input coming from Airtel STB and you're good to go!

I see. Okay, will check, when I reach home.
I had selected TV , as I had that HDMI connected. He he.

Oh wait.

If I take out the HDMI out from TV , then how would the Denon display signals goto the TV ?

For example, when I play a USB on Denon AVR directly, I get the music list and settings all on the TV screen, since I have the HDMI OUT connected to TV directly.

So, the mystery stays unsolved, since I cant that HDMI out :(

Your TV probably has arc feature and so the avr hdmi output cable can carry audio back to the avr from the TV. For getting 5.1, you need to assign the coaxial cable to one of the hdmi input or analog input. See hdmi settings of the avr. Then change the avr source to that hdmi or analog input. Even then you may not get 5.1 because avr has precedence for hdmi audio. So if both hdmi and coaxial carries audio signal, the AVR will process only the hdmi audio. So you will need to turn off the avr in TV. In a nutshell make the connetion as follows:

STB HDMI out >TV HDMI in
STB coaxial out > AVR coaxial in
Assign coaxial input of AVR to say SAT/CBL hdmi input.
Turn off arc in TV.
Switch to SAT/CBL hdmi input.

STB HDMI out >TV HDMI in [ITS ALREADY THERE ]
STB coaxial out > AVR coaxial in [ITS ALREADY THERE ]
Assign coaxial input of AVR to say SAT/CBL hdmi input. [NOT SURE, HOW TO DO THAT. YOU CAN HELP, AS YOU ALSO GOT DENON. ]
Turn off arc in TV. [NOT SURE, IF THE PANA PLASMA HAS ANY SUCH SPECIAL OPTION IN MENU TO SWITCH OFF ARC. ]
Switch to SAT/CBL hdmi input. [DO YOU MEAN, PLACE THE HDMI COMING FROM TV TO SAT/CBL HDMI PORT OF DENON , INSTEAD OF THE HDMI OUT, WHICH I HAVE NOW CONNECTED ?]

Usually we use AVR as a switch to connect different devices. That is all your devices are connected to HDMI inputs of the AVR and you select the input you want. But in your case we are connecting stb to tv and coaxial to avr. Now if you remember, there is no remote control button to select coaxial or optical input in the avr. Buttons are provided for all other inputs like DVD, BD, SAT/CBL etc. This is because the optical/coaxial input need to be assigned to one of the hdmi or analog input. Please refer the manual to know how to assign digital inputs. Download the pdf file and search for the term 'assign'. So if you assign coaxial cable to the SAT/CBL hdmi input, then you need to switch to SAT/CBL hdmi to get audio.

You must have done it, right ?:licklips:

I use an Airtel HD STB & Yamaha AVR. The best way to connect is STB HDMI to TV HDMI so that you can see family serials with sound from TV. Then connect Optical port of STB to optical in port of AVR ( if you have one ), else do it on coax. This way you can select AVR inputs to hear the sound of movies played on TV on your HT. Ensure you keep your TV mute to avoid echo. The HDMI out of AVR to be connected to HDMI in of TV to see the music list of the USB drive connected to AVR on your TV. IF you have optical port on TV , please connect that to the other optical port of AVR so that you can hear the sound of Movies played from USB drive connected to TV on your HT. This is how my Yamaha 298 works. Not sure about Denon.

If you see my diagram on the first page, that's how everything is set.

But still no 5.1 output.

I always let the TV audio for my normal channels and only switch to avr for HD channels.

I read the manual of my Denon 1612 avr once again and here is what you need to do to set digital as audio. First assign coaxial input to one of the hdmi input under Settings> Input Setup>Input Assign. After this set the 'Input mode' of that HDMI port to 'Digital'. It is usually 'Auto'. Other values are 'HDMI' and 'Analog'. I suggest you to refer the manual of your avr to know the settings.

I will reach home today and do that as first thing.

Let's see.

The connections you have set up looks perfect and you should get 5.1 audio. Did you check for 5.1 while playing channels with 5.1 sound? Not all channels have 5.1 sound, so check by playing some channel like Movies now or Star movies and see if you get 5.1 sound.

Yes, I only tested Star Cricket HD.

I think, Baji's solution will work. I will test it tonight.

test star movies hd.....
can try also...keep sammy player off...so that denon recives only one input signal at a time..........this might work

Ok here is what I did now.

Dint change any of my settings . Just went to Denon Settings > Input Source > TV.

And assigned it to COAX .

Now the Denon display shows, DIGITAL sign, Dolby Digital Icon, Auddssy icon.

I only have Star Sports HD .

I changed to the different normal channels, and the Denon still shows the same.

Is it the psudo ones ?

How do we know, when the AVR is picking the 5.1 channel HD audio from Airtel ?
