no play on wdtv

Hi,

All of a sudden, I found that none of the video files nor the audio files are working when played through my WDTV. The wdtv player shows both the led icons. The interface also comes up. But when I select the file to be played, a circular ring comes on the screen and circles endlessly. Usually the circular ring stops after say 3 seconds and the file should play. But no files play, only the circular ring goes on and on. Any solutions? What might have been happened? I am using 500 GB Wd external hard disc.

The same happened with my WDTV player and I changed the connecting cable and it worked normally. Also did you try to connect any other Hard disk/USB drive to check if it plays that?

No, I did not try to connect any other usb device to the player. BTW, somebody just advised me for upgrading the firmware. Actually i do not know anything about the firmware upgradation, just heard a lot about it. How do I do it, if it is required to be done ? My WDTV is just 2 months old.

Is there a chance of damage when we upgrade the firmware ? Plz let me know.

No. Firmware update is safe. I regularly update that. If you have a wireless internet connection and if the WDTV has wireless capability you can do a firmware update. If the WDTV does not have wireless capability you need to connect it through the RJ45 cable to your router/modem to update the firmware. BTW if it is 2 months old does it still have warranty? Just to make sure if it is the firmware problem try connecting a USB stick and see if it works or plays any file/movie.

Jayant - switch on the player with the HDD attached >> Let is recognize the HDD completely >> eject the HDD >> Power off.

Reconnect all the connecting cables from TV to WDTV and / or AVR. Try connecting another HDD or another cable with the same HDD, see if it works, my guess is it should.

Firmware update is completely safe and recommended from time to time. however, in your scenario where its not playing anything, not sure how far this will help as Firmware updates only help playing additional formats / encodes and/or fixing drawbacks in the software.

if it is a wd tv hd, there is neither wireless capability nor ethernet capability.

There is a reset button near the side usb port of your player. Take a needle and press it for 3 - 10 secs. (no idea on how long you have to keep it pressed)
If it doesnt work out then....

just download the fw file from the wd tv support link, copy it to your pen drive, go to the device update page in your player and execute it. it should work. Since your mp is only two months old, it should have the latest fw only. However u can reflash it in these cases..

i have this problem with WDTV 2 gen but only with few formats(Some MKV file played ok and some doesnt)after it got hanged by trying to play the file which dont run i set the WDTV to factory defaults and than other file will run normally other than the problematic one.
