Hi All,
Just got my Oppo BD80 through a friend who returned from US. I've connected the player and gone through the initial Setup. In the audio setting I've selected Advanced.
Now in my Denon 1910, I've connected the HDMI from Oppo at HDMI 4 and setup the input assign to that.
In the Oppo the audio is set as Bitstream with secondary audio off.
Next I played some movies with DTS-HD tracks and I hear no sound from my Denon at all. I can see the HD audio is glowing (in blue color on the right side of the display) and also the display says DTS-HD MASTER.
Please help me out here, probably I'm doing something wrong here. 1910 does the decoding of DTS-HD MA or Dolby TrueHD afaik (and that's why I bought this receiver). If I set the secondary audio to On I can hear the audio but now the receiver says DTS only and the HD Audio light goes off. It also works with audio output as LPCM. So problem is only with the DTS HDMA track decoding at the Denon.

Hi,

Just try this out, go to menu, -> manual setup -> HDMI setup -> Audio out <Amp> - Check if this is correct.

This should work, let me know.

Cheers!

Inititally I thought the issue is with the HDMI cable that came with the player. So replaced it with another cable and the sound started coming. But it gone again after sometime. So it seems like a problem with loose connection at the HDMI port. Just removed the cable and reconnected it again and now the sound coming perfectly. Probably I may need to get some good cables.

@venkatesh, thanks for replying, I checked up the settings of the Denon in the first place and it was fine.

Hi,

Good to know! Enjoy!:clapping: In my experience, most of the problems occur as a result of bad cables, loose connections, settings, earthing and so on. I have found that persistence and patience to be the best tools to fix majority of the issues.

Cheers!

Hi

HDMI is notorious for bad connections. You dont have to replace the cable. You can go back to the stock one that came with the player.

Update: The Problem is still there and it's not the Cable for sure. Somehow it seems that HDMI handshake is not happening correctly. Whenever I insert a new disk or start the player there won't be any sound at all from the DTS-HD MA tracks. If I change the audio to LPCM everything starts working. And if I change back to Bitstream again things go to mute. And I had to many circus to get the sound, it's very much unpredictable as to what to do. Sometimes the sounds starts coming if I press the mute button on Oppo and then unmute it. Sometimes I have to power off the Denon and power it on. And sometimes I've to remove the HDMI cable and re-insert it. I really don;t know what's going on here and it's a darn pain in the neck. Oppo is giving me more trouble than expected :-(.
I'm running on latest firmware upgrade. I'm trying to find out any similar issue but as of now unable to find anything. Please someone help me out here.

I hope some using the same model will be able to help you. Why don't you shoot a mail to Oppo support. Their support is quite good as well as being technically competent.

Cheers

If you can gather enough analog interconnects, connect to your denon to the multi channel input and play the sound and see if it plays fine. Then atleast you will know if its probably an issue with the hdmi port or with the player.

But in that case it'll be again the Oppo doing the decoding and sending as LPCM,am I correct? The LPCM over HDMI is already working fine. Only issue is with Bitstream, not that I can't live without it but I want it to work flowlessly as it's a new player. I hope Oppo guys will know what to do. They've sent me a mail asking few more things about the setup. I replied and now waiting for them to reply back.

If you show a gist of your email exchange with Oppo here, it will help everyone.

Cheers

As of now there is no comprehensive solution from Oppo. But anyway, here is the mail exchange,

Hi
Thanks for the response.
The Denon is setup correctly to AMP.
As I told I can hear the audio after I either remove and reconnect
the HDMI cable sometime from the Oppo OR sometimes pressing the mute
button on Oppo. The TV is connected to the Denon not the Oppo.
Also FYI I've the latest firmware upgrade.

BTW, today the audio come without me doing anything. Only thing I did was to change the order of powering on the devices. I switched on the Oppo first and then the Denon. Normally I do the opposite sequence (Denon first and then Oppo). But I don't know if this is gonna work next time.

hi,
Strange, I am experiencing a similar problem with my denon 2310 now. I had connected my Sony dvd player and PS3 in DVD and HDP input through HDMI. The PS3/DVD output picture is coming, but no audio(in the display on the left side, its not displaying any input signal).
Today I did a microprocessor reset(while switching on the power, holding
< surround > buttons together) and, the display MULTICHANNEL INPUT came and I can hear the sound.
After these when in MANUAL SETUP > HDMI >CONTROL turned ON, again sound went though picture seen.
I think its not the problem with your OPPO, but the problem with Denon.
If someone can help on this issue, would be of great help.

Seems like the issue is with the Denon :-( not the Oppo. I've just did a search on the net for similar problems with Denon and a few came up with same issue. It's even reported at avsforum also,
http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=1183243

EDIT: It seems that the firmware update will fix the issue. But the problem is that I can't do it myself for this Receiver and had to deal with the Service center. Just want to know anyone who has/had done firmware upgrade on their Denon Receivers through service centers here in Bangalore? How competent are they? Will they take months to fix it and end up messing up with the receiver or not solving the problem at all? Anyone?

dont know with the dennon service guys ,but the service from Onkyo guys is total crappy!!
they seem to pretend?? /or have no knowledge , that there is something called as firmware upgrade!!

chk it out with the ProFX guys for dennon

I bought mine from Modern World (Distributor is KEI). Anyway I'll check with them. But as of now seems like the "Mute-unmute" technique is working well for me. I hope that it'll keep working till I get the firmware upgrade if possible.

Hi Spiro, the issue is not with the ports, they are fine. The issue is with the Firmware which is not switching properly when HD audio is selected.
BTW, the mute workaround is working great. I just need to mute and unmute once or twice and the audio is back. I guess if anyone is having this issue can try this method. Seems like I've found an easy workaround for this problem then to reset microprocessor or switching off and on the receiver and other such methods that are mentioned in avsforum ;)

An update: Called the Service center(ProFx) and they doesn't seem to have the updated Firmware as of now. But another issue is that I've bought mine from Modern World and their distributor being KEI, ProFx may not honour the warranty. The person who talked with me was not very sure and he told me that he'll inform me by tomorrow if they can do it under warranty tomorrow. But most probably it'll be a paid option :-(
Then I called Modern World and they gave me a contact number of KEI service center. But the problem is that KEI has service center only at Mumbai (bad bad news for me). Also the person was not sure about the firmware upgrade. He'll get back to me tomorrow with details it seems.

On a hindsight, seems like I did a mistake by not buying it from ProFx

Hi,

I think this is something bad:mad:. If you are buying outside of India, then these stipulations are reasonable. I dont why for a guy who is buying from India. I think you should catch hold of your reseller or whoever that you bought the item from him and get him fix this under warranty whatever it costs for him.

I suggest that you write a mail to Denon people about this and ask them why you should not consider importing it from US for a cheaper price if you were to experience something like this!

Cheers!
