Hi everybody,

I have a notebook and I connect my Onkyo 607 with it by the output hdmi for the video and the optical output for the sound.
The problem is that all the sources (mkv, avi, mp3, ac3...) I tested on my Onkyo via my netbook, I have no surround and no bass !
I'm under Ubuntu Lucid Lynx and I tested VLC, Movie Player, KMPlayer, SMPlayer, so I don't know what I have to do.

1) Have you got a file with surround to test ?
2) See you solution to my problem ?

Here, all descriptions of my notebook :
- it's a Acer Aspire 7730G notebook
$ lspci | grep -i audio
00:1b.0 Audio device: Intel Corporation 82801I (ICH9 Family) HD Audio Controller (rev 03)
The specification of it are here
It's note
True5.1-channel surround sound output
High-definition audio support
S/PDIF (Sony/Philips Digital Interface) support for digital
speakers
- on sound preference, the only option that works is "Digital Stereo Duplex" ! So prehaps if I had "Digital Surround" or something like that, it could be works :/
Thanks a lot

Bonsoir,

Voila

I also use Lucid (but mainly Karmic). Most likely its a drivers issue. For eg., on my current Core i7 desktop setup, I can't get surround (or digital output) because of lacking driver support.

Which notebook do you have ?

The black output (near the pink) is an optical output for 6 channels.

It is a little difficult to find the exact problem.

- In Ubuntu, have you tried the various options available in the Sound Preferences ? You can right click the Volume icon at around the top-right corner of the desktop to see the various options available.

- In SMPlayer, Vlc and others also, you can try out different audio options. For example, in VLC, simply click on the Audio button in the tool bar and select the channels/output.

- Also, check the connections with the receiver.

- What is your speaker setup ?

So the first problem in the sound preference :

The only option that works with the optical output is Digital Stereo Duplex.
The hdmi is not possible because my graphic card doesn't have the sound on it (on a notebook it's like that )
And the Analog option are not correct with an optical output :(

Why there is not an Digital Surround 5.1 output !!:sad::sad:

I guess that's the only possible option now. Or you can try the generic line-out port for surround sound. :o

Also, it seems that sound hardware isn't capable enough (judging from the options in sound preferences). I can't confirm this because I am unable to find the exact specifications for the particular notebook model you have got.

simple install windows
then install power dvd 10
then in audio option select spdif
finish you ll get dts pass through

Surround format streaming through HDMI port to AVRs are only possible in notebooks/desktops having the following:
ATI 4XXX series.
ATI 5XXX series.
Intel Core i3/i5 with integrated GPU (This will not support true 24p playback).
