After accquiring my Garrard 401 turntable, I've become quite known in the local community as a guy who is an audio enthusiast. Recently our Parish priest visited our place and was impressed listening to my humble rig comprising the SL3200, NAD 3020 and BPL 700T Symphony Series Floor Standers. He asked me to take a look at his Church's PA system that many were complaining about. I did a due deligence exercise at the Church on Wednesday evening and am currently working on a presentation of my findings for the Parish Council. Once they approve my suggestions, I will start work on re-doing their PA system. Now, the other aspect of this project is that the additional equipment required for the Church, will be donated by our family. This is line with my committment to my good friend, FM Simon, to do something significant for charity.

More details to come in the days to follow.

Reuben,

One of the best sound systems I have seen in a church is at St Andrew's Church, Bandra in Mumbai. They had just one speaker suspended from a high vaulted ceiling which filled the entire church with a crystal clear coherent sound. Although there were smaller speakers along the side walls to my knowledge they were pretty much silent.

Most of the pro audio companies do offer solutions under the "Houses of Worship" category.
From what I have seen these are some of the most challenging installations to take on ... of course also comes with the best rewards!

All the best with your work!

I belong to St.Andrew's parish, most probably the sound was done by Roger Drego, who has also done the sound setup for St.Andrew's auditorium Bandra.

Good initiative Reuben..

Pay some attention to reverberation, which is quite bothering in many a churches with high ceiling.

Yes, actually I had previously purchased a sound processor and mixer for them which has reverb settings. Just did the purchase and donation, did not get involved with the installation and operation, previously. I must see how I can use this processor effectively in relation to the reverb aspect. The roof is not that high as this is a modern hall-type construction. The old church was a small tiled room which could seat about 50 or so people.

Be very careful. I've heard seemingly good speakers installed in churches and they sound terrible and are barely coherent. The "room" acoustics mess things up big time.
If i were you, I'd ask Kanwar for advice. I'm sure he's been there and done that.

And if mounting speakers on walls, don't skimp on the mounts. The speakers will need to be adjusted not just horizontally but also vertically for tweaking. This is critical!

yes Keith, I am aware of these aspects. I will take some pics of the church on sunday and post. This is not our usual church but more like a hall

At any rate stay away from commercial PA amps (with trafo output) and high voltage transformer transmission. max freq under this setup is 7kHz. and study the room accoustics in deapth. avoid reverberation. once I did similar system for an auditorium. I did it DIY exept speakers and preamps, using 8x leech amps.(Total 2000W) the clients and visitors were very impressed and it is still working, I persume, since I did not hear from them for a long time

I have been involved in sound setting of some church in Delhi.
P. A. System is not at all easy job since audience are many.

I have some question on your project.
Is that for the speech or praise and worship(singing with many musical instruments)
And are you going to use wireless mic?

All the best for you!

The church is used for normal service (mass). There is speech and also choir singing involved. All mics are XLR mics but there is a wireless mic used for special occasions when the priest needs to go to the church compound to hoist a flag and pray, etc.
