Today, I've checked 42ST30D and 42XT50D side by side.
Following are my observations

1) ST30D price is 53,100 while XT50D price is 49K.
Both comes with 2 pairs of glasses.

2) The Brightness levels in XT50D are higher compared to ST 30.
In XT50D, brightness can be increased to 50, while in ST30 it is 40.
For 3D, this matters.

3) Web browser in XT50D and Apps are faster because of faster processor.

4) Both played MKV, AVI, MP4 ( While these are containers, I don't know the underlying Codec in the file). But, XT50D seems to support more formats

5) ST 30 is a full HD, but I can't figure out any difference even at 0.5 m distance. As the video source is 1080i ( Tata Sky)

I am lost here, while XT50D has it's own advantages like Webbrowser, much DLNA support, faster processor and Brightness levels.

For 4000 difference, ST30 have lot compared to XT50

Neo Plasma Panel,FullHD,Infinite Black Filter. If I were you, I will go with ST30 :)
The only noteworthy issue is brightness that can be solved by keeping your room little bit darker.

not a fair comparison............ST30 is a mid level plasma with neop pdp panel + infinite black pro while XT50 no doubt a 2012 model is still an entry level tv without neo pdp + infinite black. ST30 has been highly reviewed on most sites and is on the best tv's available.

ST series is very good value for money, its not as expensive as GTor VT but at the same time does not compromise any of the technology. go with ST30 for sure!!!

I have a panasonic p50st30 and I am very happy with it. But do remember that Plasma tv's consume a lot of electricity (if you were in chennai, then that might be a concern). The picture quality is very good and natural. I could watch a Bluray disc-full HD movie from as close as 5 to 6 feet from the tv. and the brightness issue, well I don't notice any, as my TV is in the bedroom, which is not a bright room. If you want bright colors and browser support, then you can look into led tvs.

How much important is that 4K for you ? If you can afford , go for ST30 , eyes closed. But if not and you view your TV closer , then even 720p can be a good choice. remember at long distance , even 480p looks the same .

My advice would be to go for ST30.

Since you have seen both side by side which is better in terms PQ? Does neo panel display really make a difference?

No, With the Tata Sky HD video source, There is no difference in PQ.
In fact, I found XT50 More appealing to eye.

I've not tried the 3D feature.

One of the main reason that Panasonic Plasma's have taken plasma technology to the next level is because of their neo pdp panels. To say if it makes a difference would actually be unfair to years of research and effort carried out by Panasonic. The VT series would not be one of the BEST plasma's in the market if it were not for the neo pdp panel. For more info to actually see how they work and what they do :

XT cant be compared to ST, just like ST can't be compared to VT.

I went a head bought ST30, I instructed the dealer about the manufacturing date not being later than Nov/dec. But, they delivered a piece imported on Aug 2011, I've not accepted to took the delivery. So, They agreed to refund as they promised earlier.

Is it good buy the 42ST30D imported in Aug 2011 for 55 K ?

My main concern is it is imported in Aug 2011, which seems to a long period.
Is there any fixes to TV after that?

Go through the spec, it seems only difference is it is a Full HD.
I would buy Samsung plasma with Real Black filter than XT50

Yeah me too. The prices I was quoted was 50k for XT and 65 for ST. Although ST has two 3D glasses and the XT had none.

UT50 has Full HD, progressive 3D (whatever that means), better native contrast ratio and 2,500Hz Focused Field Drive (not 600 Hz of XT50)...

Which samsung model are you referring to..

we all know by now that panasonic Plasmas are good and UT and above are the best. but to make these discussions practical does anyone know if these TVs are really sold in India today and if so at what prices?

I have to buy a TV this weekend and unfortunately I do not see much progress in these discussions. Only practical solution is to buy Samsung 51E550 which is available for quite some time.

Prices of Panasonic plasma TVs as quoted by dealer in Pune (not negotiated) for 50" models (did not check 42" but expect them to be 12-15k less):

P50X50D: 62,000
P50XT50D: 67,000
P50UT30D: 90,000
P50UT50D: not committed. MRP = 120,000.
P50ST30D: 101,000
P50ST50D: 115,000
P50GT50D: 128,000

Dealer was very eager to push me to 50UT30D. Said that this will be best suited for my needs. Probably wants to get rid of the old stock. Even demo'ed the 3D on the UT30. Did not ask but got the feeling that he would be willing to knock off a further 10K.

Dealer gave no commitment on P50UT50D.

The main differences between ST50 and UT50 are as follows (left = ST50, right = UT50):

Panel: G15 Progressive Full-HD NeoPlasma <===> G15 Progressive Full-HD Plasma Display Panel with Tough Panel
Contrast: 5,500,000:1 Native <===> 4,000,000:1 Native
Shades of Gradation: 12,288 equivalent steps of gradation <===> 6,144 equivalent steps of gradation
Filter: Infinite Black Pro <===> -
Dedicated 3D Eyewear: 2 included <===> NOT included
Speakers: Front speaker (8 train speakers) x 2, Woofer (80 mm) x 1 <===> 2 x 10 watt 2 Speakers
HDMI Ports: 3 side <===> 2 rear
AV Connections: Mostly on side except for analogue <===> All in rear
Wireless LAN Adaptor: Built-in <===> WiFi Ready (The Wireless LAN Adaptor is sold separately)
