Hi,

I have subscribed to Tata sky plus HD PVR, whereby we are supposed to get 5.1 Dolby digital sound. When I connect the optical out from the Tata sky digicomp to my AVR's optical in through an optical cord, and select the HD channel, I do get the display of 'Dolby Digital TV' on the panel of my AVR, but the sound output is very poor and I need to pump up the volume, but at the same time when I connect from the optical out of my Samsung LCD to the AVR's optical in, and select the HD channel, I do not get the display of 'Dolby Digital TV', but the sound is better, and I need not raise the volume level of my AVR. This time I get the display of 'Stereo' or 'Pro-Logic' whatever we chose.

Can one tell me which was the proper connection amongst the above, or is there any better way out there, where we can get rich audio sound from the Tata Sky channels.

Regards and thanks in advance

Output levels of sound on HD channels are quite low in comparison to normal SD channels. Baring the levels of sound, the quality of sound on HD channels is good. You need to opt Dolby Digital sound for HD channels in user setting and this is a one time activity.

Even I am facing a similar problem in my newTata Sky HD (no DVR). Inspite of complaining a number of times, there has been no solutioon. Techician turns up prompltly, acknowledges there is a problem of low audio and suggests either the HDMI chord or Digicomp is faulty, but does not take any corrective action. Tata Sky customer service do not part with telephone numbers of higher ups for escalating the problem. Can any of our forum members suggest a solution?

Do you have same problem, if you use digital coax for audio connectivity from PVR to AVR?

Optical connection from your dvr to avr is the right thing to do. About the low volume levels only tatasky will be able to help u.

You can connect any spare RCA cable as a coaxial cable. It doesn't need to say "COAXIAL" on the box. Any spare RCA cable will do.

tata sky hd has both coaxial and optical outputs. For coaxial, you can use an ordinary RCA cable. If you need branded cable, then see Belkin 6 feet Digital Coaxial 24K Gold Plated Cable | eBay

^^. Sorry. I was referring to the Tatasky HD+ box. It has both optical and coaxial outputs. Did you try the RCA cable with the coaxial output? It is said that coaxial is better than optical. Since coaxial is digital, the cable should not affect audio quality. It may be a problem with the stb. Anyway, try the belkin cable and post your findings.

I am using the HDMI cable that came with my TataSky HD (NOT DVR) to connect and yes I do find the sound a bit low, but it has more to do with the fact that it is a 5.1 feed for HD channels which the Amp can fireup. In any case, using HDMI is preferred over Coax/Optical. In the times when I didn't have HDMI capability, I used to rely on Optical and found it really nice.

Maybe because you use virtual 5.1 on your receiver? In which case, 2-channel audio gets distributed to front and rear speakers. When you connect STB to receiver directly, it's 5.1, which means to say many of your speakers are quiet unless required. But when you connect it through your TV, like you've mentioned, 5.1 is getting downscaled to 2-channel and in turn distributed evenly across speakers.

Just connect STB to receiver directly and increase the volume, PLEASE don't route it through your TV.

Regular HD boxes have only digital co-ax. It's easy to find a cable at one of the stores mentioned, just look around or ask the sales guy. You could use a regular RCA cable instead. Don't want to get into "Does it make any difference to quality" question as opinions are varied. However, make sure the RCA is not corroded or damaged and in perfect working condition.

Only the HD channels are Dolby digital however their volume level is low as pointed out earlier. Overall quality is poorer than the uncompressed sound tracks of blueray but that is obvious.

There was a TATA SKY software update today. Its looks like they have added Dolby Digital through HDMI. But the volume issue is still there.
