Problem in playing 3D movies.

Hi All,

I really need your help to setup my device.

i have

3D bluray player - Sony BDP S470 (upgrade to latest firmware)
3D projector - Benq W1080ST
AV receiver - Sony DDW 5000

When i connect all these device, i m still NOT able to watch 3D movies. The display is still either side by side or top/down. The 3D menu in projector is greyed out which means 3D signals are not being received.

I am trying to play downloaded 3d movies from internet. The file had extension as mk3d which i changed to mkv as bluray player was not recognizing it.

output of bluray is connected to AV receiver and AV output is connected to projector.

One thing which i m not sure is about the HDMI cable. I am using my existing HDMI cable so not very sure if this is High Speed or not.

I wanted to understand can this be just because of HDMI cable or am i missing some setting at very basic level?
Though i already ordered High Speed HDMI cable but not yet received. I want to be sure that everything else is ok and i just need to change the HDMI cable and i will be able to see 3D movies.

Please suggest if i need to check anything further on settings.

is your avr 3d capable ?

if yes check the 3d settings in AVR first .

else connect projector directly to BDP via HDMI.

cable wont be an issue as SBS ( side by side ) OU ( over/under ) still will work on 1.3 high speed hdmi along with audio.

either change settings in projecctor to decode SBS to 3d else on the BDP.

yes, i dont think my AVR supports 3D. I tried direct connecting BDP to projector but same result.
Thing is i m not sure if my HDMI is high speed or not. How it will behave if this is standard HDMI cable?

1.3 has 2 versions if i am correct. standard and high speed which is 10.2 Gbps and can carry audio as well. however you said you can see 2 images side by side on your projector so it cannot be the cable . something has to be checked in your projector.

it is 3d ready or 3d projector. if its 3d ready then the signal needs to be processed at BDP level which the projector will just display. if its 3D then you can feed raw SBS signal and the projector can process it and you can view 3D wit glasses.

check PJ settings.

as far as i checked. change to 720p and then try 3D see if that works..

yes you got it right is 3D pj so you dont need a 3d player even normal 2d player which has hdmi 1.3 will work and will transmit SBS signal.

the 3D menu should not be greyed out. check user manul if any specific settings need to be done. there should be a dedicated 3d button on your remote. also same model is sold in india so call india CC and ask for their suggestion. they will be able to help you out.

The 3D movie you have is in SBS or OU format which is a commonly used format in downloaded files. This is different from the 3d format used in original blu-ray disks (frame sequential). The files you have are converted/created from frame sequential 3d blu-ray format to SBS or OU for saving space and making distribution easier. The advantage of these types of files is that you don't need a 3D player, because these files will play in almost all mkv players. The conversion is done by your TV and not the player. Your projector/TV should support these formats otherwise you will see only a side by side or over under image. Check if your PJ supports SBS and OU 3D files. Most 3D TVs have a 3D menu button clicking which you can select SBS or OU format. Some TVs will automatically switch the TV to 3d mode on detecting SBS or OU content. In PCs with a 3d supported graphics card, players like WinDVD will automatically convert SBS/OU to frame sequential so that your PJ will detect it as 3D signal. In your case the problem happens either because your PJ does not support SBS/OU format or because your player can't convert the sbs/ou movie to frame sequential 3d. To test 3d, buy a 3d disk and play it.

yeah right, i will check with 3d disk.

but for my curiosity, i checked the user manual for Benq W1080ST model and it does say that it supports Side by Side format too. Request you to please visit following url

thinking to visit Benq service center this weekend and request for 3d movie demo. I will bring my bluray player ... and will see how they play that movie. will update here the findings.

Finally, i managed to get it working.
As theironhorse suggested, there was some changes required in the output format of bluray player. After making changes, it worked smoothly.

Please suggest how can i make this thread as "Solved".

Hi,

You need to change the output resolution to 1080i to play SBS 3d content and to 720p for OU 3d Content.

Could you please let me know what 3d format you are trying to play?

Thanks for your reply. Im trying to play 3d contents from HTPC using XBMC player. They appear Side by Side on the screen. I tried to change setting of my Epson PJ from auto to SBS but not much of changed i could see. I will try to play it on my Sony bd player using USB stick.
