Hey guys I am getting a t-amp and am going to be setting up a stereo system with my PC. Due to room constraints I will not be getting a sub and the two speakers I get will be the only components running in stereo. Therefore I don't want a speaker that's best suited to 'rear of room' etc.

I am looking at getting some nice bookshelf speakers under 500$.

I have considered the PSB alpha B1 as well as the imagine series B4,B5,B6. Also the klipsh B20

After extensive reading I really cannot find any direct comparisons. I was hoping for a bit of clarification between these models. Why is imagine better than alpha and why B5 better than B4 and so on.

I also like Klipsh B20.

Will these speakers be good in a stereo setup? Which moreso?

PSB Alpha B1 is an award winner in its category and is a well respected speaker at its price point, its a very easy speaker which can be driven at moderate volumes with even the T amp.
After the Alpha series comes the Image and not Imagine which has these Bookshelf Speakers i.e Image B4/B5 and B6. As Imagine series only have couple of Bookshelf speaker viz. Imagine Mini and Imagine B.
Now Image series is a VFM series in the PSB Line due to the higher grade components shared from higher series of PSB i.e Tweeter shared from Synchrony and Mid-range drive from Imagine except the Bullet which is rubberised to save cost. Also the cabinet is MDF with Wood Veneer finish.
B4 being the smallest bookshelf of the family with a 4" Mid Range driver which slightly limits its Low end response due to its limited cabinet size, then comes the B5 which is having a 5.25" Mid Range Driver and has much better Low end response than its younger sibling, and finally the B6 which has a 6.5" mid range driver and has very good low end response, but with the T amp you will have to listen to each speaker yourself and pick up the best suited match.

Thanks for your response.

Would these speakers all be suitable as stereo speakers by themselfs and not in a larger hi-fi setup?

Am considering the B5 over the Alpha B1. Would this be a better speaker?

Thanks

They can be part of a large Hi-Fi setup but due to the limited size they will only be suitable for a small room.

Yes B5 is way better than Alpha B1 but here you have to be careful about system matching and in your case the T-Amp.

The best option would be to carry your T amp to speaker dealers and try it there with the models you have chosen based on net reviews. Dealers may laugh at the size of the T amp but forgive them for their ignorance and poor knowledge. 1 audition speaks louder than 1000 reviews! If they agree for home audition, that would be even better.

If you like B5, then you should go for B5. Amp upgrade is easier than teh speaker upgrade. May be you need to do it right away instead of wasting money on something you dont like.

Thanks

Thanks everyone. Just to clarify though, I can use these speakers by themselves in a stereo setup?

They aren't better suited for a a 'rear' speaker position or anything like that in a larger system?

That will actually depend upon your expectations. People do you these speakers by themselves for stereo with satisfaction.
