I have a ~10 year old Aiwa Micro Hi fi system (DVD-XRFA880DVD). It has a 'digital out' port at its rear. Any idea whether I can connect that to a digital in on an external AVR or it is for transmitting the video to the TV/PC monitor?

Also, it has a mini disk in. What is the purpose of that, any idea? It takes in a regular 3.5 audio jack in as well, so I connected with the headphone out of my laptop and ipod. I got sound but it is of very low volume and a very much stiffled (e.g. sound coming from underneath a pile of cloths...) Any idea why it is so?

Thanks in advance :o

Post some photos of the connection or refer to the manual.
If its only one rca then most probably it will be digital audio (coaxial) out because digital video would be 3 rca (component) or hdmi. You can connect it to any external DAC or avr's digital in.
And most probably that mini disc is a port for aux connection.

The Mini Disc in is to connect to Mini Disc players that Sony introduced in early 90s and supported for ~15 years. This is a read-writable disc format that did not become popular outside of Japan. the CD revolution took over this despite lots of investment by Sony.

I am posting an image of the port. Please help in in identifying what exactly it is ...

Just post the link to flickr or upload the image to tinypics.com and post the image link enclosed in

Those will fit. The input is just covered by a small protection. Optical cables are available in ebay.in at cheap rate. I'm using a belkin one and it is VFM.

For excellent sound that won't break the bank, the 5 Star Award Winning Wharfedale Diamond 12.1 Bookshelf Speakers is the one to consider!
