I am looking to upgrade my dad's home theater with a new receiver.

Need one with HDMI switching and one that has preouts so I can use my active 3 way speakers as the front speakers and move the wharfedale diamond 8.2s as surround speakers.

Ideally i'd like to keep it under 40k.

Used or new whichever works.

Check out Marantz NR1504/06 and NR1604/05/06 series
They have HDMI switching and preouts (2.1/2.2)
NR16xx have zone 2 preouts

NR1506 and NR1606 are the latest. The rest are older models; you will be able to get a bargain on them. Look for used products too.
15xx are 5.1/5.2
16xx are 7.1/7.2

All are 50Wpc (good enough in my personal opinion)
Other differences are BT/Wifi/Ethernet/USB/Audessey flavor

At 40-45K you should be able to get the right solution

I own 2 Marantz products
PM7001 for stereo music setup; NR1605 for movies
Satisfied with NR1605 features and performance for the price point

Cheers,
Raghu
