Hi...

I just bought a pair of Monitor Audio BR6...I like them however feel that the bass is a little boomy due to the extra driver. Since it is fairly new I have the option of returning it back to the dealer and without loosing much money get the RX6, instead. Do you feel it is a good upgrade? Will it improve the overall SQ? Have any of you auditioned both...if so...what are your views.

I am using it with a Harmon Kardon 3490 stereo receiver...a Pioneer Elite PD D9 as the source.

Pls let me know your thoughts...

RX series of MA is much better than BR series. I am also using BR5 and feel it is lacking on bass front and iam in dilemma to replace my BR5 with RX6.

Zoso:

Yes, indeed, BR6 will have more bass than the BR5, so obviously the BR6 needs more room to breathe. Need to place them at least 3 feet from back and side walls, for the bass to be more natural; if pushed to corners might boom.

And, since they are new, why not allow them to settle in, loosen up. Having said that, if you're in mood to exchange it for the RX6 and the dealer is okay, by all means get the RX6, stunning sound!

But, before the RX6, also audition the BX6, should be good.

:)

Thanks everyone...really appreciate your quick response. I plan to let it play for a while and then take a call.

Sometimes it becomes difficult to just stop and enjoy what you have...think I might actually be going through that. As I'm sure most of you know...this thing is addictive:)

Nope. I was under the impression that it will increase the bass which I did not want. Won't it?
I was however looking at going for a smaller speaker like the BR2 with a sub but that is ruled out for now.

After all the gyan I gave in my previous post...I might just end up picking up the RX6:))...really hope it sounds better than the BR6 in my hall.

the rx6 will be any day much better than the br6. it of course depends on your budget and if you feel spending that much extra will be worth it to your ears or not. the hk 3490 puts out some REALLY TIGHT bass so it doesnt say too much for the br6. but the ma's are known to have a slightly more boomy sound to the bass when they include an extra driver in it esp if the room isnt really big and airy

Thanks...

Another question to you guys. Do you feel that the NAD C372 will work better with the RX6 over the Harmon Kardon 3490, which I currently have? I like a bit of brightness and tight bass.

Need to finish this set up once and for all :)

imo DEFINITELY. i've had the hk 3480. now my setup is ma rs6 and c272. didnt really like it at all. parts of it are good. really tight bass. amazing sound separation. highs are a little too harsh. and mids are not consistent. uninvolving and muddy. doesnt put it all together. the nad is much more musical, less listening fatigue, sweet highs, full and forward mids and puts it together really well. thats whats important. slightly warmer as well. the bass is big but a little distant and not as tight as the hk. but overall a clear winner over the hk imo.

take a listen. and give it some time. sometimes by just listening to just one song the hk may seem better because of the bass and sound separation. but over a period the nad wins hands down

Thanks...will try it out for sure.

Just read a few not so good reviews about the NAD C372. What do you guys think? Will it be good with the RX6 or should I be looking at something else? I am getting a good price on the C372.

what sort of music do you listen to

I would say...40% Classic Rock...20% Jazz...10% Blues...10% Sufi...and the remaining would be all the new Top 40 sort of stuff...Hip Hop...Trance etc.

The Jazz % seems to be increasing since I bought the MA's :)

What amp do u suggest for the RX6?

then the ma's and the nad will do just fine. the only thing its not that good for is hard rock / heavy metal and hip hop. but for classic rock (which is mainly what i listen to) and jazz it is immaculate. sweet sounds coming out of the horns, goes really low down when it comes to the bass. beautiful vocals that make it all the more musical. like i said the only thing that it lacks A BIT is the sound separation and the bass being a little distant. though from the characteristics of nad it would be done on purpose to cut down on listening fatigue. the setup will take you into another world when you listen to it over long periods

Thanks AFJ...

So coming back to the original post of replacing the BR6 with the RX6. Went and got myself the RX6. U guys might think I'm crazy but I actually liked the BR6 better. The RX6 has just done around 10hrs...so I'm hoping they will sound better after the burn-in.

Here are my views...
- The soundstage on the BR6 seemed wider than the RX6
- The vocals...mids are very good on the BR6
- The treble...highs are superior on the RX6...a little accentuated however not fatiguing. The BR6 has more neutral highs...I felt the need from time to time to tweak this from the amp. This was not the case with the RX6.
- The Bass is tighter on the RX6 and less boomier than the BR 6. The flip side is that it could feel less robust depending on your choice.

So here I am sitting at 1am listening to the RX6...liking it however still comparing it to the BR6 and thinking if I should go and get the BR's back. I need help...any shrinks in the group :)

firstly a run in on the speakers improves it. give it about 10-20 hours and it'll be close to 100%.

secondly what amp are you using. sometimes a better speaker brings out the flaws in a not so great an amp.

Yup...agree with u. I've done around 12hours on it. I have the Harmon Kardon HK3490. The volume is from -80 to +10...and I usually need to play at -25 to get to descent sound. Which I feel getting too close to max vol. Which amp do u recommend with the RX6?

the hk flattens out once you take it past a certain volume. as for amps, the ones to look at are the nad, marantz and cambridge. take a listen to them. theyre all good, just have different characteristics. the cambridge is a little more neutral than the nad but sounds a bit clinical as well.

Thanks...any particular models in Nad and Marantz? What do you think would be the SQ difference between them? Also any thoughts on Arcam?

Sorry to load you with questions...

to drive the rx6 nicely you would need the c375. no idea about marantz. the arcam is in the next level, both in sq and price:)
