Dear FMs,

I have recently set up a basic system as follows :-

- Boston Acoustics A 26 Book Shelfs
- Norge 2060 Amp
- Brand ridge Wires
- Pioneer DVD Player as source.
- Panasonic RCA connecting DVD player to amp

I somehow get quite a resonating bass. It is is something like the ones you feel in cinema hall. So just wanted to check with you if this is the feature of the set up or I'm missing / have mis configured something ? Any suggestions / comments / feedback will be highly appreciated.

I mostly play from other original sound track or ripped CDs / DVDs.

Many Thanks in Advance.

two probable causes:
1. Some kind of processing on the amp e.g Rock, Jazz, Hall etc. often called modes are responsible for this type of boominess
2. The placement of your speakers either too close to th erear or side walls read the manual about the optimal positioning..
Cheers

Thanks for the feedback rav_mk1

My speakers are about 5 inches away from the wall, mounted on Nexus stands from sound foundations.

I just checked my amp. Norge 2060 has not such setting. I just has 3 smaller knobs for Bass, Trebble and Balance and a bigger volume knob.

There is another knob which on the top of which is written 'tone' and below 'defeat', not sure what they are meant for.

Thanks again.

Tone defeat means bypassing the bass and treble knobs settings and sending the sound out as received..
Try giving the speakers a little more room from the wall at least a foot and if space permits keep them at least 6 ft apart see if this helps or try positining curtains carpets to absorb the resonance..

Cheers

Hi rav_mk1,

I tried your suggestion. The resonance has reduced somewhat and the bass is also sounding better now, thanks.

I just realised the distance between the 2 speakers is about 3.5 feets. Is that sufficient ?

Your right speaker has 2 walls in its periphery... And too close. Try to keep about 6 feet distance between speakers and try to be as away from the wall as possible say about a meter if possible.

Look at any other wall in your room along which the speakers can be placed.

This will be trial and error but you must try.

Do read up on speaker positioning methods and tips
.many on this forum and on the net.

If you are using bass control then reduce it to minimum or zero or use the tone defeat switch.

Hi mpw,

I extended the distance between the speakers to around 6 feets, thought from the wall I could manager only about a feet. But the resonance had considerably reduced now. I would say its only 10-20 % (I was listening to Rehna Tu from Delhi 6).

I look out for ways how I can keep the speakers away from the wall for about a meters, but thanks anyways for the help.

sure, mpw, I'm actually thinking of shifting the set up to another room, which for one is lying vacant and two, I think I can afford to keep the set up away from the wall for about 1 meter in that room. Let me try that also and let you know..

Thanks always...

and post a fresh pic

:-))

these experiments will help you understand the sound you hear in your room.

when time permits try a thicker curtain on your window.

step by step.

one last thing before i leave this thread..

if you do manage to get the speakers about a meter from the real and side wall.. play some music... push the speakers symmetrically back by 3 inches.... listen...

and continue this process till you get very agreeable music at a minimum distance from the wall.

the process should take you a couple of hours.

lastly get some blu tack ( made in australia or UK ) and use small gobs of it under your speakers ( maybe about 3 to 4 mm dia about 2 or 3 per speaker ). That should be available in bangalore. This is for stability not sound.

Experimenting is fun isn't it!! enjoy your new four talent and use it to identify the sweetest spot to listen to you music.

another possible mod is to stuff some towels (ideally foam) into the ports to block them, and see if the bass is boomy.

another thing, is the boominess the same, no matter where you are standing in the room?
Try moving around and see what happens !
