I came across this interesting research that tries to co relate objectively measured harmonic distortion and listener preferences.
The methodology includes means to minimize listener bias through blind testing. It was done over the internet with audiophile participants from all over the world, but Europeans participated most. (n: 67)
The demographic range is also interesting in other ways with sound engineers, musicians, and music aficionados among others. Age ranges between teens and upto those in their 70s, and a lone woman participant!
Among several insights from this study I learned that sometimes a little bit of distortion may be subjectively preferable.
Is it a perfect study? No!
Has it been peer reviewed? - not to my knowledge
Is it fun to read? - Absolutely, for me
