Afropop I believe is the word. Pop music but with African roots.

The artist is Anglique Kidjo. The first album i got (gifted) of her is Aye. Instantly like that just cuz it was simply different from the usual CDs I used to browse. You will find a lot of energy and some complex mix of music, often from different cultures! Later i picked up Oyaya and recently a collection titled "Keep on Moving"

How about Mory Kant & Youssou N'Dour? I've quite a few albums by both and really love their music. Ditto for Ali Farka Tour too.
