Right now I am listening to ...

Romantic songs in BOSSA NOVA beat. . .

This is from Wikipedia: Bossa nova (pronunciation (help·info)) is a style of Brazilian music popularized by Antônio Carlos Jobim, Vinicius de Moraes and João Gilberto. Bossa nova (which is Portuguese for "new trend") acquired a large following, initially by young musicians and college students.[1] Although the bossa nova movement only lasted six years (1958??63), it contributed a number of songs to the standard jazz repertoire.

interesting piece of info there Xela, remember hearing bossa nova only as a preset track on my casio keyoard :)

Relaxing to the tuneful "The Romantics - A Windham Hill Sampler", its sad to have lost a great "new age" recosding label lost to music industry emperialism (bought by sonybmg).

A very good recording indeed, has anyone else holds any disks by Windham? or Will Ackermann for that matter?

Sarang

Knights Of Bass - 07 - Bass L'Amour

This is one of my favourites song in slow bass and it just vibrate and rumbled my room with massive bass vibration.

The Laya project

Music belongs to all human beings!

How true it is...and when you listen to 'The Lyra Project' you don't need any other proof!

The Laya Project

earthsyncbj2.jpg

I spent this entire week end in listening to this album and yet to come out of the the mesmerizing spell of the music!

The Laya project is a musical and visual journey of folk communities in the Tsunami affected regions of Sri Lanka, Thailand, Indonesia, Maldives and India.

While based on regional folk music traditions, the Laya project mixes and enhances the original recordings, crossing boundaries of genre while sill preserving the music of the project.

Some of the performances are unique and have been documented for the first time .

What about the music? I have no words to describe the musical ecstasy I experienced while listening to this album. Just two words: ??Buy it?!

Finest recording and digital re-mastering, top notch production qualities. Even its liner notes alone are worth the price of the album. . And you won??t believe it but this all is done in India.

Stunning Video version of this album is also available for Rs 800.

At least just log to Earthsync.com , what a beautiful web site!!

Laya Project (2 CD album) Rs 550. This is one of the best albums I purchased in the recent times. Highly recommended.

Hi,

Just wanted to share this information.

I recently discovered a new FM radio channel and have been enjoying for the past fifteen days: "Gyan Vani" - 107.2MHz in Bangalore. More details about the radio channel in your city at:
Gyan Vani Stations and Schedule

I have been listening to the music program on this channel at 8pm. The quality of the programs and music are excellent. Last week, there were some excellent programs: veena recital by D. Balakrishna, sitar by Sayed Pateh Khan and vocals by Pandit Jasraj.

In my home, the reception is also pretty strong and clear. In all, I have found an excellent music source for my evenings.

Prasad Redkar.

Lucky You!
In Delhi all we have are a dozen stations belting out the same fare-latest Bollywood smash hits/remixes most of the time.
I wish they would come out with some dedicated stations like WorldSpace.
Surely there would be enough listeners for stations playing, e.g, Jazz/Ghazals& Folk/Classial-hindustani-Carnatic-Western etc.

The tracks 'Box of Rain' and 'Operator' from the Grateful Dead album 'American Beauty'.

Primarily acoustic, and must-have for rock/folk/country aficionados, even those of us who are not particularly enamoured of the Dead sound.

Astor Piazzola--Luna ,
Duke Ellington--Duke's Big 4.

Very relaxing, " late night " listening Albums, both.
Luna is an astonishingly creative Album-never heard anything like it before.

Same 4 mumbai too Kamalji. The FM basically blares bollywood masala all the time and the only channel with some decent music( 107.1) has terrible reception.
Had read on this forum a while ago that DAB was being introduced in India. Any news or update?

I'd read abt it too, but no further news.
Heard Worldspace( the parent Co.) is in deep financial shit.

In Bombay, the FM stations play a set of songs at a time. Listen to one station, and you have heard them all. And the small talk really gets on my nerves sometimes. I for one, much prefer my own music collection.

By the bye, I just got a CD of the Buddha Bar. I had heard of it before, but heard a few tracks for the first time now, and I really couldn't make head or tail of it.

Guess I am getting old. Which reminds me, does anyone have music by Elek Bacsik? I have one CD, with versions of Blue Rhondo A La Turk and Take Five. Amazing. Wonder why he never became famous.

I think the prohibitive license fee regime and outmoded restrictions on content have made FM radio a very bland, commercialised experience in India - one where every operator aims for the lowest common denominator. Frankly if I were an operator with such massive fees to recoup, I would probably do the same.

Worldspace comes as a breath of fresh air - I know people bash it for proprietary hardware, extreme file compression etc. but still, some of the content is outstanding. This is what Radio can be at its best.

@persiflage: Can't agree more about the licence bashing.

Lets keep our fingers and wait for something like XM/sirius decides to compete with Wspace in the indian market. There has to be some competition, which is ofcourse better for "we the customers".

Till then
:)
Happy Listening,

Hazir - Hariharan
Meghadootam - Hariharan and VA

Hariharan is truly versatile, he shines in everything he does. From being a part of Colonial Cousins to Singing Carnatic Classical, and even his command over Sanskrit is exemplary.

Vishvamohan Bhat has also done a great job in Meghadootam, the overall album makes you feel "Why just a few verses from such a masterful poetry?" "why not the entire meghadootam?", still whatever these guys have done deserves appreciation.

Sarang

Hi,

Don't despair! From the site that I quoted, Gyan Vani is available in Mumbai (105.6MHz) and Delhi (frequency not listed) amongst 21 others.

The programming is different from Bangalore though. However, if I see the Mumbai listing, there are classical music programs available at 9am and 9pm. In Delhi, they are available at 8am and 3pm.

If classical music is your cup of tea, give this channel a try.

Last night while driving home from work, I listened to Bellamy Brothers. Turn up the mid range a bit, bass down a little, and listen to the now crisp bass lines. Listened to them after quite a while.

This morning it was Led Zeppellin.

@Ruenigma: Not to mention his command on Urdu diction, it's outstanding by any standards.

Frankly am not too enamoured of the Cousins stuff, but guess an artist has to make a living. Great if this cross-subsidises some of the more meaningful stuff.

Likewise Shankar Mahadevan (of Shankar-Ehsan-Loy fame).

@Persiflage: How can i forget about his urdu skills. :)

Right now listening to Govi in another masterpiece, "Andalusian Nights", an interesting coincidence about this album is when i first read "The Alchemist", this one was playing in loop mode in the background, some 3+ hours and about 100 pages later i realized that its the perfect album for this book.

Now whenever i play this one, cant forget to remember the literary masterpiece as well.

Very little chance of this happening as Worldspace is a major shareholder of all satellite based radio stations including XM and Sirius.
