John Cougar/JCMs music is more eclectically arranged than either Springsteen or Dylan, though initially he started as Bruces clone with a bad boy image. Ive been following his career since early 80s (Ive in my possession one of his earlier LPs Nothin matters and what if it did). Cougars musical journey is quite fascinating - his experimentation with music is much vast than the other elder statesmen mentioned here. Presently his music more folksy with sparse instrumentation.

Yup, never heard the violin put to better use in the Rock genre. Cherry Bomb is a gem! I too find his music lean and sparse but very good. On a side note, it appears that I could exchange my entire collection of music for yours and still be as happy...

Thanks! Ive been collecting music for more than 30 years and was fortunate to befriend a roadside music dealer who loaned me LPs to check out the music before I decided to buy them during my initial 20 years. This helped me a lot in understanding various branches in music. With the advent of internet, the present generation of music lovers are much more privileged in this department!

I think of him as a Bob Dylan who can sing. Terribly underrated...

Initially he was all hard rock (hence the comparison to Bruce Springsteen). Only later his sound evolved into more roots rock (more common with the southern rock genre).

Coming to Bob Dylan... well I still enjoy his singing never mind he's no Jim Morrison.

... I have been known to run screaming from the house when someone played a Dylan album. As a songwriter, wonderful: as a singer, awful!

Might I suggest It's A Beautiful Day? Wonderful rock violin. Hot Tuna too; not sure where this fits in the genre spectrum.

A couple of days ago, I was given the recording from the concert that I had the honour of sponsoring to celebrate my 60th Birthday this year.
