Sansui AU-417 amp

an amp more than 25-30 years old would have, at some point in time, been on a service technician's desk for some reason or the other. the key here is to ensure that replacement components were of good quality and of matching value. it is common for indian service technicians to use locally procured spares and even compromise on value. for example, if a electrolytic cap5 uf has to be replaced, if not available, the technician is likely to use 4.7uf. these little variances have an impact on performance. keep your eyes and ears open :)

It is easy to get carried away by the sound and not realize any "deficiencies" esp when one has not heard one in good condition. But if the OP has the extra budget to import any required caps in the long term, he should take a chance, provided it is a good bargain.

hi G,

you make a good point. that risk may always remain when dealing with used stuff.....cheers

Long ago I had two Sansui Integrated Amps one was AU-D7 and they were wonderful " Made in Japan " product which are no more available.....If you get any Sansui amp. in good condition then go for it.

Would a Sansui AU-D5 amp be worth 7k and an AU-D7 be worth 12.5k? What about the sound quality of the phono pre-amplifier stages?

Phono pre-amps on AU-Dx series and even AU-abc series were supposed to be very good. And most had two phono inputs!

But as in any purchase of very old equipment, a thorough check and test is essential to test functionalities.

BTW, an AU-D11 is available in Mumbai. And the phono stage on this model is supposed to be the very best in the series.
