Hi Saurabh, try MINCREAM available at any hardware stores. I have been using this since 15 years with excellent results :)

Just applying a polishing cream.. will get you nothing.

You need to buff down the surface with a soft cloth and a firm hand.

The scratches will largely disappear, and it will remain so till you scratch it up again. :)

No Sidharth, MINCREAM is not material specific. It can be used on plastic, acrylic, television, refrigerator & wood, its perfectly safe.

Saurabh: Apply a bit more for the first time. Remember, deep scratches cannot be removed, superficial ones can be removed by polishing 4 to 5 times, it's time consuming job. Do not use any chemical based polish, that may tarnish the surface permanently.

Anil,

Can this MIN Cream be used for polishing off small scratches on my car? A big Toyota Camry just brushed against the front left corner of my Getz. I chased him down, thanks to Kolkata traffic (otherwise I had no chance even though low rev acccelration is pretty good in my Getz and I know how to extract the last oz. out of it). But the guy's wife was more adament than the guy himself and told me to do whatever I wanted and they ain't paying me for the damages. I do not like scrtaches at all .

Regards.

Did you call the cops and file an FIR. That way you can at least get insurance.

No, Min cream cannot be used for removing scratches from a car. It is not abrasive enough and it may also smudge the colour from surrounding areas. The best for cars is to sandpaper it, use a metal filler, and spray paint it yourself. There are special shops that sell the same colour as your car in spray cans.

Cheers

Thanks Venkat for the information. Actually after I washed off the area, I now see that the scratch is very minimal, and not much noticeable. So I can just let it be.

Yes, I did call the cops and filed a FIR. I even got a number for my FIR. But by then those people went away (actually seeing that I wouldn't let them drive away, they just walked away leaving the car at that spot and I cannot forcibly make them stay there, definitely not a woman) and without them confessing I have no chance of getting money from their insurance. I had a passenger in my car (a student of our Institute) who can be used as witness. But generally in these cases, nothing happens and they took advantage of that.

Regards.

I am appalled at the behaviour of people. You have an accident, and one this mild, what is the need to walk away? Ashamed of facing the police? The number of times I have been to the police station for myself and for others, I think all the guys there know my face.

I am not sure you need the other guy for claiming insurance. Just the FIR should do. As long as you have the other party's number, it is the insurance company/police headache to talk to them.

Cheers

Acrylics with scratches can be best polished up with "buffing soap for plastic" sold in shops specialising in industrial buffing products. Apply the soap sparingly on the object and polish up with a sheepskin bonnet (made in Kolkatta for the whole of India) attached to an ordinary electric drill. This procedure is used in the Aeronautical Industry worldwide, to polish aircraft canopies for perfect vision qualities.

One of our HFV member Anilkumar is using cerium oxide to clean the scratches and i think that's the best material for vanishing scratches. I have seen this in one of his post about restoring AKAI turntable.

Do anybody have any idea about the availability cerium oxide? i asked to Mr anil but he didn't replayed.
