Hi everyone,

I’m starting a new voiceover project and could really use some guidance. The project involves narrating a short documentary, and I want to ensure my delivery is clear, engaging, and emotionally appropriate.

I’m curious about tips for pacing, tone, and breathing techniques, as well as any tools or software that can help improve audio quality.

Additionally, I’m unsure about how to prepare the script for smooth recording sessions. Has anyone here tackled a similar project?

I’d love to hear about your experiences, challenges, and any advice you have for a beginner in voiceover work.

As a reference, you can search for a similar genre of documentary on the net where someone else has done and take cues from it regarding the tone and pacing.
The distance from which you speak from the mic also affects clarity. All the best in your new endeavour.

I have produced numerous videos for various clients, yet I have not ventured into voiceover projects. Nevertheless, I can offer you some valuable advice.

You have not specified the equipment you currently possess, such as the microphone. What software are you utilising for video editing, among other things? The latest iPhones and Samsungs provide commendable audio recording quality. If you plan to pursue these projects further, I recommend investing in a good microphone; a model priced between $50 and $100 will suffice. I have experience with Adobe Premiere Pro and DaVinci for video editing. These programs come equipped with built-in audio editing features, allowing you to eliminate background noise, adjust pitch, and more. There are numerous options at your disposal. If you are not utilising these applications, Audacity can assist you in refining your voice. You can find introductory tutorials on YouTube; it is quite manageable.

As for the script, there are various approaches depending on your documentary's theme. For instance, you will need a narrative to guide how you wish to film the videos. Based on that narrative, you can either create your voiceover or edit the video first, then review it and develop a voice that complements the visuals. Should I discover any helpful videos, I will share them with you later.
