Hey folks,
I live and work in the US now, but my parents are still located in Delhi.
I have some good gear here in the US and availability is no problem. 2 years ago when I was visiting in India, I tried to look for a good subwoofer, and could not find anything suitable by visiting many shops. Most were selling HTIBs. I hope things have changed.
I am looking to setup a nice HT setup for my father. He has recently purchased a 42" LCD that he wall mounted. He is complaining about the poor sound quality though. I think he got spoilt living here for a few months listening to my HT setp that has massive floor standers and a huge center ch.

What are my options as far a decent speakers go?
What are the brands easily available in India without a huge premium?
For now I am looking for only the front 3 channels and depending on these 3 +/- a 10-12 inch sub.
Are there any good custom builders in india?
Are there any Internet direct seller that are good?

Or should I just bite the bullet and ship stuff from here in my luggage when I travel in January and hope the customs doesnt kill me and that things dont get damaged in transit?
I have even considered doing a DIY custom build there by carrying some drivers/crossover from here (GR Research). But since I am there for only 15 days... it will be a pain to put things together.

I know lots of questions... but I would appreciate any help!

Ask him to get in touch with Denny of Bass & Treble, located at Dwarka, New Delhi .... M - 9999016124.

Your Dad should find him a fair guy to deal with ......

Carrying drivers from GR Research etc is the most cost effective thing to do and would be a great VFM option provided you have someone knowledgeable in Delhi who can build cabinets for those drivers.

Getting such a person is not easy I guess. I got it done a few years ago while in Delhi through a very knowledgeable accoustic engineer who makes some hi-end hi-fi stuff but that was a while ago and he being a thorough gentleman, obliged me and gave his carpenter the design & dimensions.

Best option since you are away is to source the speakers from a good hi-fi shop & be done with it. The likes of Wharfs, PSB, Polk or Jamo comes to my mind immediately.

Excellent...
Will check him out!
My parents live in Dwarka... so this should be good.

My Dad has a very good carpenter, who is very resourceful guy. Can pretty much reproduce anything! Get good MDF is a bigger problem. These builds dont do well with hardwoods or low quality plys.
However I am still keeping it as an option. I am not good with setting up the crossover boards, but in delhi I can get an electrician to do it for a small fee.

I like PSB, from previous auditions, Havent heard the Wharfs/Jamo. Will need to do a bunch on research on the available models.

If your father want to listen to PSB HT set-up at Delhi, you may ask him to contact Lakozy New Delhi at LajpatNagar, Tel - 9910041260.

There are a lot of builders for the GR models for not a lot of money. You can find them all at their circle at Audiocircle. It should be pretty easy to carry a pair of N2X's with you while you come here. Also, the N2X and the N3S are simple sealed designs that even a half-decent carpenter shouldn't have trouble building...

Get the TriTrix CKD kit from parts express when you come here in January. You can put it together here and with these, for most content, a sub may not be required.
Look for the Dayton and BIC center speakers at PE too. Extreme value for money.
