Dear All :

Can our members enlighten me about bringing floor standing speakers as checked in baggage from Singapore. Has any body brought it. Any safety precautions u can recommend.

It is only about the possible damage that may - occur. Or is it prudent to buy one here in Bangalore, paying cosiderably more.

Customs duty etc is separate.

Thanks in advance.

Arun.

Which speaker are planning to bring? What is the weight of the speakers?

Have you checked the prices of the same speaker in India? And when you pick them up in the airport in India, you will be a sure & easy pick for customs officials and will have to pay "something" to them. If they are quite heavy and beyond your checked in baggage limit, you will also end up paying excess baggage charges. If you consider all these costs and if the total landed cost of buying it from Singapore is only 10-20% cheaper than India, then it may not be worth it in my opinion.

Don't go for shipping it is risky, we already have a big thread running on damage that happened to shipped speakers.Just search for the same and read through the same.

Beware !! The Courier companies are sitting there to take hold of your A/V equipments and damage it to the point of no return.

I have seen people crying to see their equipments getting damaged by the Courier Company.

Its a big NO - buy it from the local market even if it costs more......

The OP had mentioned that he will be carrying it as checked in baggage in an airliner. Not that it is any better, but I would risk saying that checking in baggage in an airline is a bit safer than shipping through local courier. Because there are only two areas where the baggage will be handled manually - in the departure & arrival airport. Ofcourse the handling in arrival airport will be more risky than departure airport!

Quite a few members here including myself have carried electronics over from abroad as check in baggage. I carried a 40 inch LCD (which is more fragile than speakers) from Dubai without any problems. Ofcourse I have not seen anyone mentioning in hifivision that they carried floorstanding speakers.

I think it comes down to the total landed cost as I mentioned previously. If the total landed cost of the speakers is only 10 - 20% cheaper than Indian prices, then it may not be worth it.

Correct me if I am wrong but speakers are not allowed to be carried as check in due to 'magnetic interference' or so I was told by one of my friends working in the aviation industry....

not sure if that is true..many Music artists (Including Pink Floyd) would not be able to do live shows if they were not allowed to carry their equipment :) with them. anything other than flying would take ages

I'm sure they would be travelling by chartered flights and won't be travelling in regular commercial jets. May be those flights would be specially equipped.

Denom it is not true. In ALL my flights from Dubai to Chennai, I count at least half a dozen Sony / Pioneer / JVC 3000-5000 Watts PMPO music systems being taken out of the luggage conveyor belts by their owners. And these systems too have magnets. If what you stated was the case, none of those guys would be able to ship them from Dubai to Chennai.

Captrajesh, at least in few flights, I have seen bands check their equipment into commercial airliners.

i am looking to ship wharfedale diamonds 10.1 Fronts speakers from usa. is it worth with the duties taxes import fees. Its listed aas 24K INR here. What will be the dutycost for used and new ones any hasseles .

INR equivalent on amazon.com is around 19k. Add courier costs, taxes / duties and "risk" and you wont gain much vis--vis Indian cost since HiFiMart delivers free to your doorstep anyway.

Not worth the trouble, IMO.
