Hi,
This is my first post!
I previously owned a Sony 5.1 HTIB (bought atleast 12 years ago), the subwoofer and the receiver were integrated (the receiver had an inbuilt dual tape deck, 5 cd changer, radio, and the most it could do was Dolby ProLogic).

While the 5 speakers are still in great condition, the amplifier in the subwoofer and the receiver are spoilt. The sub-woofer itself is still in working condition (and great quality) but due to the fact that the amplifier isnt working it has become a passive/non-powered subwoofer.

I am looking to get an entry level Home Theater Receiver, I have been recommended the Denon AVR-1612! I got a demo on my tower speakers, but the store I went to said there was no way to connect the passive sub-woofer. Now I am aware that there are ways of cheaply connecting the passive subwoofer (e.g. car amp) but I am not entirely knowledgeable! Can someone recommend whether this sub-woofer is still usable and how to use it.

Also Sony - SST552AV Service Manual on Windows Drivers Downloads this is the spec sheet for the tower speakers. While getting the demo the person showing me the receiver said that the speakers are 8 ohm ratings and I should go for a more expensive receiver. While I understand that getting a more expensive set-up is going to sound louder and better, the more pertinent question is whether the AVR 1612 is a good pairing with the speakers! I do not entirely trust the store that told me that my sub is unusable.

Thanks in advance
