Would you go full ranger, horn, sealed, ported box to get maximum out of music like this -

Would you go full ranger, horn, sealed, ported box to get maximum out of music like this -

A 12 inch coaxial in a ported cabinet running full range
Or
An 8 inch Coaxial in a ported cabinet in a 2.1 configuration. Subwoofer would be a ported 15" ( pro audio driver)

I would prefer the second option over the first one.

JBL, Altecs, Zu are three I have heard (can’t recall the exact model numbers except for the Zu Omen DW which I have now) and was very impressed with the immediacy of the sound, the coherence (integration of highs, mids and lows) and the slam and delicacy when called for. That’s not to say well designed and engineered two or three way crossed designs can not be good. Just that when nicely engineered single drivers can do it so well why go for complex designs?
I am sure the DIY community members can suggest more.
I am yet to hear Lowrhers and Devores.

Was always curious about Zu... In videos available over YouTube, it comes across as bright.. Perhaps videos don't capture bass that effectively.. Your take?

I really like the Omen Dirty weekend model that I have. It does bass really well in my 10’x 12’room. So nicely that I sold my subwoofer. I don’t think it goes below 35-40hz. But what it does till then is adequate for me and is lovely.

On certain recordings the treble can be a bit shrill at times, I mitigate this by angling the speakers out parallel to the back wall and it works fine.

Over the years I have had several speakers. Some I liked very much. The Zu DW is one of them. It’s one of those that quickly draw you into the music and keeps you involved. It’s definitely not one of those I can play “background music “ while I do something else. I have had it for four months and I am still delighted with its tone, and performance across genres.

Currently pairing these with either the Croft Line integrated or Karan Acoustics KA i180 Mk2. DACs are Lindemann Limetree network or EV Designs PowerDAC R. Streaming Qobuz. The sound is distinctly different with each combination. The only thing common is I like them in each avatar. But I am struggling to analyse, compare and describe the differences.

This one is the least expensive of the speakers Zu offers. I believe they have speakers at $20k too. I am sure each model sounds different. But I have not heard any other Zu speaker.

Purchase the Audiolab 6000A Integrated Amplifier at a special offer price.
