Speaker Upgrade

Hello Everyone,

I am planning to upgrade my speakers from Montior Audio GS10 for my hifi rig.
Options considered based on suggestions and a lot of hear say ( I know...auditions being planned)
a) PMC 23
b) Blumenhofer Fun 17
c) Blumenhofer Genuin FS 4.2
d) Proac D18
e) KEF R700/ 500
f) Monitor Audio GX200
g) Cabasse Egea 3

I am looking at floor standers only. And speakers that DON'T require very careful partnering(now that's tricky...planning a complete overhaul in due course).

My heart has been following PMC 23 especially after Denom's experience at WHF 2013. But would like to know your take on other options as well.

Waiting to hear from you all.

What is your Amp ? the Rethms are fantastic but will need pairing with Low power tubes /SETs..with a regular SS amps they may not sound that great

In the end the Amp-Speaker synergy is more imp than individual amps/speakers so plan that well unless you are planning for a new amp as well.
If you have been running monitor audio earlier the PMC/Blumenhofer may be easier to replace without any changes.

Gentlemen ( i wish there were some ladies too in this wonderful hobby of ours....),

Greetings from Rethm.

Seeing some posts on the Rethms, i thought i would pen a few clarifications and answer some questions that seemed to have popped up in response to reignofchaos's and hydra's very flattering posts after their visit our studio in Cochin.

To answer some of the questions:

Size of room:
One can use a big speaker in a small room. It is just that the bigger models are usually designed to "fill" larger rooms with larger soundstages, and very often it may just be unecessary in a smaller room. One problem, however, that certain big speakers may have in small rooms is the possibility of excessive bass. The Rethms have a level control and a filter setting selector on the bass amplifiers....which will ensure that it can be tailored to meet the requirements of most rooms.

And....we do have smaller models for smaller rooms.....

Placement in the room:
Soulforged's observations is correct. We do indeed like to place our speakers well into the room -- as this provides the best illusion of a real soundstage. And this applies not just to the Rethms, but to ALL speakers. The Rethms will work perfectly well much closer to the front wall....but dont expect the same holographic 3-dimensional soundstage one would get with speakers pulled well out into the room. Again, some speakers may be subjected to a "bass bump" when it is placed too close to a wall. In the Rethm, because of its level control, the bass can be turned down appropriately.

Amplification:
Yes....my preferred amplification is certainly valve. However, good solid state amps do work exceedingly well with them. Srajan Ebaen when he did the new Saadhana review used Nelson Pass's new solid state amps exclusively for the review. My dealer in Chicago -- says that his favourite amp with the Saadhana is a pair of 300 wpc Clayton Audio monoblocs.

The Rethms are rather revealing.... and less-than-stellar valve amps tend to sound better than less-than-stellar solid state amps when used with high-resolution loudspeakers. There is a greater chance of an ss amp sounding thin and edgy than a valve amp.... and this is why most folks do tend to think of valves when talking Rethm. If you have a smooth and full sounding ss amp.... it will work well with the Rethms.

Some folks i believe still think Rethm uses Lowther drivers. We stopped using Lowthers 3 years ago, and we now have our own custom built line of wideband drivers -- one for each of our models.

And last but not least....all of you are welcome to come visit us in Cochin. It will be a great privilege to meet and spend some time with music and audio lovers like you guys.

My apologies....for this rather long post.

Cheers,

jacob

Welcome Home Jacob!! I have been exchanging emails for a while with Jacob..and in one of his emails he said that Indians donot believe that Rethm is a product of international quality!!
After joining this forum..Jacob will have a different view point now. There are great number of Rethm followers like myself..

Hi reignofchaos

There is no hint of grain or hardness even in earlier Rethm versions. I have owned all of them. From the seconds to the saadhana version 1 to the version 2

Hi Jacob

Welcome to the forum.

And again, I needed a reason to travel. This time it was a weekend leisure trip to Mararikulam which I had postponed from a previous date and it so happened (and you have to believe me that it was coincidental) that I had to alight/board at Kochi .

Just a prelude. I had interacted with Jacob in the past when I approached him a few years ago for a basic tube pre amp. Frankly, I did not know much about his product line up then and anyone would have just turned a blind eye but not Jacob. He was kind enough to get me one that did fit my need, after patiently listening to all my queries. During the later days, when I discovered the kind of equipment he was actually dealing with, I was astonished. Such a down to earth, humble person... and he hasn't changed a bit.

So, I had this good 90 minute cab drive to Kochi to Jacob's place. Jacob was guiding the driver and was at the gate to receive us. I recognized Jacob from his hairdo ;) . After the pleasantries, my family was left to relax in the beautiful lounge and we went to the listening den.

The first comment I made once I entered the room (and I kept mentioning this a couple of times through the conversation) was 'these speakers are big ! '. All long I had been thinking that the entire line up had a tiny foot print... damn those pictures or may be my eyesight. I know that I was looking at the Saadhanas but they were big and even the Trishnas which were behind the seating area were not 'small'. However, the model that I was interested in - the "Maarga" was missing:indifferent14:

Well now to more important things - the equipment and the experience. The Saadhanas were hooked to the Gaanams on the Thaalams ! I do not recollect the source equipment because I was in a hurry to grab Jacob's Ipad. Like previously, a long session and so I will mention the standout tracks, rather only one. I liked the way the speakers handled every song. But this track floored me.

Hello... by Lionel Richie

The experience was similar to the one I had @ TLR when I listened to the Peggy Lee number. It was as if I was at a live performance. But there was a difference - the scale of presentation. With the Blumenhofers, it was like the artist was performing in a small jazz club but the Saadhanas made me feel that I was at a concert in a large auditorium.
Everything about the speakers was huge (there I go again)...the soundstage, the dynamics, tonal clarity, detailing... everything was amazing. Every time Richie uttered Hello , it just left me mesmerized.
I ended up hearing the song 4 or 5 times (may be more) not for the sake of evaluating the speakers but for the emotions which can only be experienced.

I made the mistake of listening to the Trishna after the Saadhana. When we switched to the Trishna, the vocals were hoarse but after a few minutes things were fine. The Trishna is all what the Saadhana does but on a relatively smaller scale which unfortunately, I was not ready to live with.

It may be thought that these words are more emotional rather than an analytical judgment but I wasn't doing a speaker review here. Rather I was a looking for a soul mate capable of exhaling emotions and possibly make me shed a tear or two.

It was a dream date with the Saadhanas !

Cupid had struck... I'M IN LOVE :)!!!

Cupid had struck... I'M IN LOVE :)!!!

I know how it feels. Fell in love with them the first I heard them at a FM's place.
I later went around auditioning for a new setup but that sound continued to stay with me, even haunt me.

If you ever go to Mumbai pls try to see if you can listen to Prems setup on the same with Virens customised SET.

You may end up proposing to the speaker :)

and then you will realize that its not the speaker alone.. that you may end up proposing to..:)

there is the amp there is the source... the pre amp....the cables and everything.... the specific room treatment...:)

But seriously - the Rethms are wonderful speakers.

Good luck in your hunt !

regards

That's where I heard them the first time. Prem had the earlier version then.

oh boy...

this raaga is coming to a crescendo
or maybe an ascendo
or maybe a maarga trishna or saadhana
or maybe a naimed besottment or assorted components..
About to paint an acoustic portrait
Much to the Merlin's surpise
and the ATC's chagrin !!

The Harbeths wait with bated breath
and hopes Raaga doesnt go to the Big Fun

Maybe things are not so passive after all
The active route is as yet open to all..

;)

Whatever the choice
may they have a lovely voice
to bring the owner to joy and tears
each time the show starts..

PS : just for fun..
