Last month my brother entered the world of vinyl by buying an old humble Philips 242 TT. The TT was connected to an old Philips Powerhouse audio set thru a Behringer phono preamp. The audio leads from Behringer PP were connected to the Aux terminals at the Philips Powerhouse. The TT played well for almost three weeks in this stop gap arrangement thru the Philips Powerhouse speakers and being an average system the sound output was average as expected.

Philips 242TT -----Behringer Phono Pre------Philips Powerhouse System Aux ------Philips Powerhouse Speakers DH215

Then last week he bought a Technics SA R330 receiver amp. Upon reviewing the Technics amp and Philips Powerhouse specs decided to couple the Philips powerhouse speakers with the Technics amp. The specs of both components are as follows:
1. Philips Powerhouse speakers model DH215 impedance 8 ohms
2. Technics SA R330 receiver amp - power output 2x60w ( 8 ohms) / load impedance main 4 16 ohms

The Philips Powerhouse audio system was replaced with this amp in the arrangement above retaining the original Philips Powerhouse speakers as follows.

Philips 242 TT -----Behringer Phono Pre ------Technics SA R330 Receiver amp Aux ------ Philips PowerHouse Speakers DH215

Upon startup initially the system did run well with an improved sound quality and a good bass. However after 15 mins suddenly the speakers lost the sound and upon turning volume knob full a very low sound level was heard as if connecting the TT directly to the amp without the pre amp.

Suspecting the TT or phono pre amp to be the culprit, the audio input was changed to the mobile headphone out instead of the TT / phono pre. However the results were the same. Then the amp was replaced with the original arrangement of the Philips powerhouse and still the result was the same low level of sound.

Our understanding was that the speakers being of 8 ohms impedance and the amp being rated for 4 16 ohms load the amp should be able to accommodate the speakers or vice versa. However it seems the speakers were not able to sustain the output from the amp and probably have given way. I have asked my brother to open the speakers and check if there is any obvious burn out in the wiring or the cross over(!!!)It is 2 way speaker. Does this speaker have a cross over circuit?? I am not sure, will have to chk after opening.

I would like our experts at the forum to throw some light on the whole issue if the original idea of coupling the Technics SA R330 with the Philips powerhouse speakers DH215 was wrong (idiotic!!!) if yes then why as this will help in avoiding such blunders in future.

Also like to understand which budget range speakers can be coupled with this amp. Somehow I am not able to import the block diagram for connections into the post.Sorry for the lengthy post.

Thanks, Kishor
