Hi friends,

I am new to this space. Started searching for a mid range avr and pair of FS couple of months back. Took Demo of Denon with Polk tsx 330 and 440, Onkyo with Jamo s426/s428 and Sonodyne sonus 2605 v3 , Yamaha with yamaha speakers and Finaly listened to tannoy mercury v4 with a marantz stereo amp. Then I found Marantz NR 1601 for 23k on Hifimart.Since Its a 2010 model taking demo was not an option. It supports all the relevant sound codecs and price was attractive and Marantz is known for Sound quality, I didnt gave a second thought. Expecting delivery this week.

I wont be going for a surround set up as of now.So I need help to choose a good pair of floor standers for Marantz NR 1601. Which All speaker brands pair well with Marantz? Will you suggest any of the above mentioned speakers? Budget 40K max. Based on your opinions I will take demo again and decide.

Room size is 11x11. Usage will 70 % movies and 30 % music. Going for only 2.0 set up.

Seems a lot of people are taking the 2.0 floorstander + AVR route (I myself am in the same boat)
Your thoughts on the Tannoy Mercury V4s with the Marantz stereo amp ? Not good enough ?

11 x 11 ??!!
You would be 'best off' with satellites in case it is ever going to be 5.1 (more than enough) or 7.1 (not needed for this space) AND 'better off' with BS. FS might fall in the disappointment zone, IMO.

Any bright speaker would pair well with Marantz. However people have also paired warmer speakers and have liked the sound, so it all depends what you like.

Isn't it a good pair of BS better match for all the Marantz slim line AVRs?
Will it do justice to the FS?

@grunthos,

The sound stage created by Tannoy Mercury V4s with the Marantz stereo amp is very good. I heard only music. No idea about movie performance. Lets if any FM has any movie experience with Tannoy Mercury V4.

I'm not even thinking about 5.1 due to space constraints. I have never listened to a BS before. Please share some thoughts, models etc on BS.
I will be connecting my Laptop, DVD player(might upgrade to Blue ray) and Reliance HD DTH set top box to the receiver. Will BS alone will handle the full sonic range or do i have to add a Sub also to compliment the BS? I have an old sony HT and the sub sounded very boomy in that room.

That room is not a closed room. There is no 4th wall. Its not a hall either. This room opens up to our dinning hall. So if I place speakers facing the open end of the room there will be lot of open space for the sound to travel. Will this additional info change your opinion?

That means marantz is warm and it should be paired with bright speakers, right? I like crisp sound with not over the top bass.

Can you please specify speakers brands that will pair well with marantz?

The Marantz stereo amp which heard easily drived the Tannoy Mercury V4. I think AVR will also perform the same way. I m not sure.

Full information is need for opinions. All details are expected to be put upfront. You have not provided the dimensional details now ..... Worthwhile suggestions don't come this way!

The two rooms together can be considered as 'L' shaped. The room where the Tv is placed forms the 'l' part of the 'L' which is 11x11. The other room is 15 x 15.I guess this will give you a picture.

In my opinion need not be. Stereo amp is stereo amp and would be much better to drive any speakers than the AVRs especially the slim line series.
The NR AVRs are of low power drive compared to the Marantz SR series. Please demo if you can or check with NR series owners before the purchase.

Thanks Sunil.

I will definitely check that.:)

Some of them are pairing Definitive Technology with NR1601. You may want to demo them and see if you like it.
