A speaker with 86db @ 8ohm vs 89db @ 4ohm for an av receiver with 100w @ 6-16 ohms. Which is the most suitable speaker for said av receiver irrespective of sound quality or tonal balance of speaker. Which speaker will load more on receiver in terms of current/heat/life of receiver etc.

room size ?

receiver make ?

some receivers mention specs in higher THD band and some like HK mention lower RMS power but at low THD..

take your pick :)

We are discussing only about matching of speakers with av receiver irrespective of room size, outputs THD and for any av receiver having above specifications.

If amp can drive 6-16ohm speaker then the speaker with 89db at 4ohm is automatically ruled out.

86 db sensitivity speakers will draw more power than 89 db . For 3db difference receiver has to pump double power in 86db speakers than 89 db. Conversely in terms of ohms, 8 ohm speaker will draw less current than 4 ohm . Receiver has to pump double current in 4 ohm speaker than 8 ohm. In other words, can we say that both the speakers are equally efficient for same output SPL and draw same amount of power from av receiver.
