Hello friends,

Have anyone in here used STK amps. Such as STK 4192 II, STK 4171 II, STK 1080 II, STK 439 etc. Is it worth trying. I got my hands on these (very old, original Jap stuff in proper packing)

I had a STK459 diy amp made by a local bro who is professional audio technician. It was good for me in those days. It is about 15 yrs ago. It requires powerful psu but very minimum ckt.

You may try it out. What is ic number? Have you checked out the datasheet?

IC nos are STK4192 II, STK4171 II, STK1080 II, STK439. I checked the data sheet and I figured out the circuit too. Hope they are worth the cost of assembling them. I am particularly excited about STK1080 II.

Looks like a fine chip (big IC)

I have an Stk amp, psu and trafo from an old sharp system (STK488-050). Few traces of printed circuit has been lost somehow. This thing is heavy.

I have used few STK amps earlier including the 459. They work quite well and have high gain. They are a decent set of chip amps.

I had a Sony mini component system which had stk series ic of 70 w per channel at 6 ohms, but compared to hk av reciever I had at that time, stk's vocals were not great, may be the Sony had a bad preamp section!

I have used STK kits extensively in the early nineties. Both 459 and 4392. My understanding of amplifiers performance was very rudimentary at that time. Even then, I found them better compared to either the LA4440 or the TDA amplifiers.

They were from Sanyo I think..and they were rugged...the STKs tolerate some amount of mis-use...

They need a big transformer to be driven properly... 12-0-12 5 Amp used to be insufficient....

STK 1080 II is an output stage with integrated biasing i think. Worth giving a try with +/-45VRails for a 8 ohm load.

I too think I should give it a try. +/-40V for a 6 ohm load would be okay I guess.

When I use +/-12V trafos, I would like a min of 8-12 Amp or two 5-6 amp transformers. STK could do with +/-20 to 22V min I guess.

That totally depends on the number of the ic, mine was running with a 40 v trans..

And la4440 (Sanyo) is some good sound at an extremely cheap price.. if two of them are bridged without those cheap bass treble part available in the market.it produces good mid details

Off topic, still..Yes, LA4440 used to be really nice. I still have them in my amp collection. Also have the LA4805 which I feel is more refined. Then there is NEC UPC1230, which I like the most out of the three.

Then came TDA chips, I have tried 2030 and 2003, both works well with +/-12V. TDA2003 sounds good.
